March 6, 20196 yr Popular Post Finished this box today. The bottom was not two piece till I turned the bottom off . So I added a stand. Box is spalted white oak and lid is spalted pecan. The finish is lacquer buffed with Maguires buffing cpd and then polish.
March 6, 20196 yr Gerald, That is really pretty wood, and the 2 woods go together very well. You did a nice job on that is the base a 3 type of wood? I like it, the way you made the knob on top it looks like a plug. Good Job!. Herb
March 6, 20196 yr Really nice Gerald, that white oak must have been down a long time. "Turned the bottom off"? Never heard of such a thing!
March 6, 20196 yr Absolutely beautiful, I love that spalted maple. Hey Gerald, purely semantics, but when does a vessel become a box, or a box become a vessel? Box: a container with a flat base and sides, typically square or rectangular and having a lid. "a cereal box" Notice I bolded "typically" because that leaves room for other interpretations. I am not being a smarty here, I truly do want to know if in the turning world, there are flip flops on the terminology, and when to use them, I know larger round containers would be called vessels, or a bowl if there was not a cover or top.
March 6, 20196 yr Beautiful indeed! And John asks a good question. Is this a box in the turners world, or maybe a box in Mississippi?
March 6, 20196 yr Very nice piece and beautifully done. I'm not going to show my wife, if I did,.............................. "I want one too"
March 6, 20196 yr Late to the party, as usual. All the great descriptive adjectives have been used, too! I really like the finish and how well the spalted pecan and oak match together. The smooth finish must have required the addition of, at least, a little CA. Super turning, Gerald! Edited March 6, 20196 yr by lew

I made a box one time dovetailed all 12 edges. It didn't have a way to get inside so I was told it wasn't a box. HErb

March 6, 20196 yr Author Thanks for the comments. No CA Lew, just satin finish lacquer and the polish. @John Morris a box is small and can be held in one hand and has a top (my definition) . Boxes can be round , square , or any other shape or combination of within that definition. Sure this could be a lidded bowl but box sounds much cooler.

March 7, 20196 yr Hey Gerald, no matter what it's called, it's beautiful, I just felt left out is all.
