  • Went to check on the DC bag and empty the can.  Found a mess of dust everywhere.  Seems a small crack opened up into a larger crack and a pencil sized hole was in the plastic suction tube.  SOOOOOO.

It will idle, roughly, but won't drive.  When I give it some gas, the engine shakes badly and has no power.  I don't think it is anything serious because it hasn't been all that long since I was able to go get gas and pick up some wood from the local lumber yard.  I think it might be a vacuum leak or a disconnected hose, but I'm not much of a mechanic.

Tom, "if you decide to accept this mission, please follow along..."

I assume the CEL (check engine light) has set on? On a Chrysler product (including Jeep), you can extract the DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) w/o a special scan tool/code reader.

Simply insert the key into the ignition, cycle key to on (not crank) position, then off, back on/off, finally back on and watch for codes to appear. (video below)

If you have a digital odometer, the code(s) set will display preceded by a "P". Capture the codes and report back...maybe we can assist further. If a non digital odometer, you still can extract the codes, but a little trickier...however there are You tube videos for that too, I'll find and post for you. Pretty simple either way.

Another option to read codes is purchase an inexpensive (less that $30) code reader. If you decide to go that route, let me know, I'll give you my recommendations. Last, if you could drive it, any Autozone, NAPA, Advance Auto, or O'Reilly Auto will perform a scan and most will give you a print-out of the codes and likely fixes.

Good luck on this mission...this tape will self destruct in five seconds.

Sure sounds like a fuel pump to me.

Dave, actually, the CEL is not on, but it is always possible that the lamp is burnt out.  Now that you remind me, I do have a code reader.  Worth a try.

Ron, I did have to change out the fuel pump, maybe 5 years ago.  I wouldn't think it would be bad again already, but it could be if I had rust and other gunk in the fuel tank.  Maybe a fuel filter?

Certainly a possibility if it idles but won't take a load. When was the last it &/or your air filter were changed? Surprised though it hasn't set a code(s). Could be in "Pending" I guess but usually once there, the next restart sets CEL.

If you suspect a vacuum line (and little critters like to gnaw on them this time of year), take a hand spray bottle filled with water, set to moderate mist; with vehicle running, begin slowly spraying in/around vacuum lines, fumes canister etc.; listen for any change in engine speed. If that occurs, in a given area, work closer to try and pinpoint. Old school method, but it does work.

It really sounds fuel related, Tom.  You may have a code set but no light.  Could even be a dirty throttle body.   Hmmm, maybe a bad muffler bearing?

Hate it when those go out.

Tom, Sounds like Throttle Position Sensor.

Is the truck displaying a Check Engine Light?

Refurbing the DC, much better looking now.  Got all new gaskets from the borg.  Cost all of $6.  Tomorrow I will put it back and give it a run.  Hopefully sucks better and leaves less dust in the dungeon it calls home.

I read somewhere about being able to upgrade the impeller for older wall mounted DC is this worth doing? I don't have the space to put a larger more powerful unit but would love to get the best out of what I do have.

Like I told Grandpa Dave, no light, but the lamp might be burned out.  I'll try to pull a code when I get time.  Right now Christmas is approaching like a runaway freight train.

Have seen a number of YouTube videos where people hot rod dust collectors.  If you listen closely or research what they bought some of those set ups are well into the $1200 USD price range.  Interesting modifications available online for doing so.  As for how much improvement one gets out of it I have no idea.  My unit sits on top of a 55 gallon plastic drum and still has good suction so not looking to change the set up.

You know you might be closer than you think.

My last truck had not much power no matter how much I stepped on the gas.

Turned out to be a Catalytic converter. Man was that expensive.

A couple of friends and I started a "Procrastinators Club" about nine years ago. One of these days we'll actually have a meeting!
