Michael Thuman Posted December 14, 2018 Report Posted December 14, 2018 Careful tapes are not super accurate measuring tools. So only use one tape per project. Artie, LarryS and Cal 2 1 Quote
Popular Post tomp Posted December 15, 2018 Popular Post Report Posted December 15, 2018 That brings back memories. Many years ago, a friend and I worked together, initially building laminate countertops. When assembling the tops, we found it quicker to have one cut the build-up strips to length while the other glued and stapled the strips to the u/s of the top. I remember one night - we had 9 tops in the shop at one time for a rush job - and I was cutting to length and passing the pieces over, and it seemed that every piece was the wrong length. Of course, we each felt the other was measuring incorrectly - "See, the parts exactly the length you told me to cut?, etc. Took a while for the penny to drop and for us to realize that the tips of the tape were different and causing the "error" and pick out a matched set - which lasted until one of the tapes was dropped and the tip got bent. These were the Stanley 25' tapes, I've since switched over to the FastCap tapes which have a great design where the hook is protected by the case so it doesn't get bent if dropped. Cliff Posted December 15, 2018 Report Posted December 15, 2018 You have a water heater timer. How has that worked out for you? Did you save money on electricity? Do the heater elements do OK given that they are required to run for longer periods to bring water up to temp after a period of being shut down? Gunny and Cal 2 Quote

It goes off twice each day for a couple of hours during the winter to warm the shop up. Normally summers here are not too bad so I do not use it much for AC. Just turn it on when it gets too hot. Pretty durable unit. Has been in use since 1996. Artie and Cal 2 Quote

You just set the timer for about 20 to 30 minutes before you will need hot water. Worked great but you do have to purchase extra on/off switches to attach to the timer wheel. That was over 30 years ago and was a mechanical timer , there may be electronic timers now that can handle 220. Cal 1 Quote

For half a century I read the tape numbers upside down, and can't remember the number of times I got brain cramps and mismarked a measurement. Yes, Virginia, there is a right handed tape...this is not to be confused with a left handed monkey wrench... Most tapes are left handed or better explained this way. Typically, the tape is handled by the off hand or non dominant hand. This means if you are right handed you hold the tape in your left hand and mark with your right. The normal inclination for a right handed person is to hook the material on the right side and open the tape to the left. This eliminates having to cross over your left arm to mark material. Most of the tapes up until recently, (left handed tapes), place the numbers on the tape up side down, when used by a right handed person. With a right handed tape the numbers are right side up and facing the user. The Fast Cap Righty/Lefty is a great tape...I found mine at the local Woodcraft store. It took me three trips there before I finally snagged the last one that they had. They couldn't keep them in stock. HARO50, Cal and tomp 3 Quote
