I may be mistaken, but the pic makes it appear that the tools design is raised.  Rolling this around a piece of pottery or cornice plaster would sink the design, not raise it.

Going off of this observation maybe it was used to roll the design into clay or other medium and then filled with plaster for the design.  I have a couple emails out to plaster restorers but have not received a reply as yet.

I just happened to look over a Tandy Leather flyer I got in the mail.  Black Friday sale, leather embossing tool.

I went to You Tube to see how it works.  The first is a machine:

The second one demonstrates a hand held model

You may have just hit the home-run with this one Cal...darn close...I could see the lipped edges on our mystery tool as guides for a specific width leather keeping the pattern straight or maybe even to score for cutting.

I am skeptical about the purpose of the tool as stated by Cal, but I am on board with how the tool is used.

I am looking at leather embossing tools, and they have sharp ridged edges on the patterns, but this months tool, has very soft edges, all the way around, it would be impossible to emboss leather with such a rounded edged pattern.

Devils advocate!

Hey guys going back and looking at the design in the first picture I don't think it shows any wear at all..There is lots of age wear everywhere else except the the part that makes the design... I would think it would be made for clay or something soft like cookies but why would anyone want to ruin a cookie with designs like that?

I did see several embossing tools like that in a pottery shop...

perhaps the used it on pottery or they made clay/stone accent borders..

they are also called deco liners...

John, the tool you pictured may be worn from years of use...

Hey John - I never said that is what it was for!  But it has sparked some renewed interest...

I have to agree with you that it is unlikely to be a leather embossing tool, but for a different reason.  I think it is just too big to use on leather.  All of the ones I have seen pictures of are much smaller and allow for some decent psi to make the design.  The tool on hand being so big would require quite a man to put enough pressure on it.

I like Stick's pottery or clay use, except that this tool would indent the design instead of having the design proud of the surface... maybe Jess's cookie dough?

Those are the words I was looking for, I couldn't quite get my thoughts out, but you hit the nail on the head.

mold pattern maker...

pour the slip or whatever into the mold being a dissimilar material...

fire the the two together...

the mold is expendable when they are separated...

Closing

I'd like to thank everyone for their efforts on November's What's It, there did not seem to be a consensus on this item, and I did not see any reason to submit it to MWTCA with a defined answer. With that being said, we went to a random draw of all participants in this topic, and we'd like to congratulate @Grandpadave52 for being chosen to receive a calendar year of membership to MWTCA and all it's benefits and materials members are privileged to have.

Congrats Gramps! Please PM me with your shipping address and first name of significant other for their membership roles. Out where you live gramps there are typically some wonderful MWTCA meetings showcasing members tools collections and sales and guest speakers.
