I live close enough to know a couple of other criteria should be considered as enticement too ... warm year around and dryer climate...preferably without mosquitoes, snakes or other critters which might consume pets or people.;)

we don't meet your criteria..

I feel your pain, Gramps!

I can see the appeal of Florida to the "Snowbirds" that frequent here in the "Winter". Now that my mother is gone and I ended up with the house, I'm thinking of altering my plans and pull off a reverse. Florida in the "Winter" and the mountains of eastern Tennessee in the summer.

I put up with black bears and rattlesnakes when I was a kid...however, I used to trout fish a couple of streams in sneakers and cut offs that nobody would fish because of "the snakes" ...never saw one, or was ever bothered by them. I've been "eaten to death" by mosquitoes and gnats in the swamps and marshes of Louisiana and had more then one encounter with a territorial cotton mouth. The one thing I just won't put up with is the heat and humidity...enough is enough. Thirty five years of the H/H is my breaking point.

I'll remind you, however, there is no ideal spot for weather. Snow and ice storms in the north, hurricanes in the east and south, tornadoes in the Midwest, and ground shakers and mud slides in the west. Snakes, mosquitoes, gnats, bears, lions, wolves, alligators, et. al. They are all over the places. Pick yer poison!

Just like the old saying, "...faster, cheaper and better"...pick any two of the three, but you won't get all three at the same time.

There were times I felt like it...one thing you never wanted was for your boat to break down and get stuck in the marsh overnight! Every gnat within 20 miles came for the buffet. The mosquitoes in LA aren't just big, they wear old time leather flying helmets, fly up to the door, knock, and then let themselves in...

sounds like the jungle  residents...

Did a few TDY tours in Alaska. While refueling B 47s, one of our crew was carried off by a couple of those Alaskan sized mosquitoes. As they flew off, I heard them talking. One asked if they should eat him right away or take him back to the camp. The other one replied that they should eat him now because, if they carried him back the bigguns would get him.

That won't happen. Been married 38 yrs and with the exception of 1 year my wife has lived within one block of her childhood home. If a highway was coming thru she would be the last one fighting eminent domain.

If I would have done that,I would still be working. The only jobs near my childhood home were handyman jobs that don't pay much, or very often.

You boys should spend some time in North Ontario. Now THERE are some REAL mosquitoes! We used to trap them and fry one up for lunch!DSC_0001.thumb.JPG.9ae91a1cd87ae6ae3be664da9f86314b.JPGDSC_0003.thumb.JPG.3dbbe728b76bb0cd8d6008a132bc59e8.JPG

Personally, I prefer the ones with the spiked jaws, but this is the only one I have left.

Long time ago, I lived just down the road from Tallmedge....back when Quaker Oats was still in Akron....Had a place in North Hill, Akron.

4 hour drive...think I'll pass on that.....just to go to a Hardware Store?    Used to kid the Boss about driving that far...just to go to a Gold Circle department store.....

Edited by steven newman

Yeah, you can't even go to the Tallmadge circle to Bumpas Drug (they sold all manner of things) or the restaurants around there.

There was a Brown Derby up in Stow, OH....along State Road 8......then they built that Interstate through there...

Been a swarm of large mosquitoes get scared up when walking across the lawn lately.  Don't think they bite though.

Tallmadge circle

I believe there are 4 roads that intersect, 8 entrances to the circle, and its probably one of the smoothest circles in the state.
