October 1, 20187 yr Popular Post Woke up about 4 a.m., typical, made a cup of coffee and read the Sunday paper. Beautiful morning so I moved to the porch around 6 and watch the neighbors leave for work. School bus picked up the noise outside. Grass needs cut. Came inside and checked some mail. Pretty quiet now, I think I'll take a nap. First day of retirement, yeah I think I can get use to this. Maybe cut the grass tomorrow.
October 1, 20187 yr Popular Post Bob, it's that leisurely imbibed second and third cup of coffee, then it sinks in. Of course, watching the neighbors leave for work is a treat, too. Be sure to wave. Edited October 1, 20187 yr by Gene Howe
October 1, 20187 yr Popular Post I'll try to keep this as short as possible, even though the story spans about 50 years. Back around 1968, one of my dad's co-workers gave him a 40" long section of log, flattened on three sides and about 7" thick. Apparently it was walnut. The billet sat in my dad's shop for about 20 years while he tried to decide what to do with it. 30 years ago, when the LOML and I were building our house, Dad decided to let ME worry about it, so the billet moved to my shop, where it occupied whatever corner had enough room to house it. Time passed, as it will, and now our son and DIL are building THEIR own house (squared logs). Son needed some hemlock boards, and found a small family sawmill operation about 45 minutes away that could supply his needs. That is how I met the owner, Larry. Watching his bandsaw mill in operation, I asked if he would mill my short log, and for how much. Larry told me to bring it in and he'd look at it, so this past Saturday I did just that. I am now the owner of enough nice lumber, 1/2" in thickness, to make the LOML that jewelry box she has been asking for the last 65 years. The cost? Larry refused to take anything! BTW, I always suspected the log was NOT walnut, but butternut. My suspicions have been confirmed! I also found out that the lumber is priceless, since the Ontario government has apparently banned the cutting of butternut trees! Endangered, or something like that. John
October 1, 20187 yr Popular Post this week: need to sit down and plan the storage cabinet for my office (and then build it), and i think tomorrow, i'll wander down to the shop and turn a bowl. it'll be given away next month at the IDPA match, placed on the prize table. for those who don't know, IDPA matches (pistol shooting), the match organizers only award little trophies to the various winners. but then the match organizers either buy prizes, or sponsors donate prizes, and when the match is all done, they put all the names in a hat (or bowl), and draw them out randomly. first one drawn gets their choice of what has been placed on the prize table. second drawn, choice of what is left, and so on. so even if you came in dead last, you have a chance at winning a really nice prize (like a free gun!). otherwise, the same 6 folks would hoover up all the good prizes, and the lower ranked shooters would not show up next time. so i'll make a little pine bowl, get it finished, and someone can win it. i'll be sure to put my name on it!

It has been awhile since my mental clock has missed 4AM and Gin is usually the culprit.

I still wake up ~4 AM most days too, but once I've stumbled to the bathroom and back, I'm good 'til coffee at 6:30. Word of advice on the grass needing cut now that you are retired...Never do today what you can realistically put off until tomorrow. Once tomorrow comes, re-evaluate again. Happy you took the plunge and joined the rest of us. Don't hesitate to ask for retirement advice, recommendations or interventions as needed. We'll be glad to help; Besides, what else have we got to do?

Looking forward to hearing and seeing what is going on "down under." Forgive us if our responses seem delayed do to the time difference, but since it's already tomorrow there what lottery numbers should we pick? Anyways, look around and if you have any questions about the site don't hesitate to ask. Otherwise, jump in, join the learning, the discussions and the fun! 8 minutes ago, Tas said: 18 years to retirement. Bring it on. Believe it or not, those years will come faster than you might imagine...certainly worth the wait though.
October 2, 20187 yr Weekend: finished last week's mowing; was going to start on this week's but decided to hold off until the first of the month. Took a trip in a "time machine" Saturday. More about that to come. This week...normal duties; Last home volleyball match of the season for youngest grand-daughter was tonight...shouldn't have, but they lost; last regular season match is Wednesday. Sectionals start next week. Friday night football is Senior Recognition Night...Oldest grand-daughter will be recognized during pre-game ceremonies. She has been a Student Trainer during her 4 years in High School for the football team. This will be the first of 3 Senior Sport's Team recognition's for her during the school year (Swimming & Tennis as a 4 year participant). Where has the time gone??? Mowing & trimming started again today and will progress as the weather allows; also need to start some maintenance in the berry patches and asparagus as well as begin to do other outside winterization projects. 'Tis the season
