I think it was Ole Ben Franklin that made his out of wood. so when he flew his kite on a stormy night they would insulate from the electricity when he held the kite string in his teeth ,and put his hands in his pocket to warm up his fingers, or something like that.

Actually, his dentures were made with sheep's teeth! Apparently those are the closest to human teeth.

Apparently, what I read back in grade school was incorrect. Now, having done some investigation on the interweb, it seems that George's dentures (he apparently had several versions over the years) MAY have been constructed with the teeth of DONKEYS!!! However, there is a record of him paying for nine teeth, extracted from his slaves. Historians assume the teeth were for dentures.

Lordy, John. Quit researching. It just keeps getting worse.:P Donkey teeth and sheep's teeth are bad enough but, using teeth out of some other poor fella's mouth is just plain nasty. And, I'd always read that George was exceptionally kind to his slaves.

It all depends on how you look at it, Gene. George DID pay for the teeth, (although nowhere near what the teeth were worth) and I guess since he OWNED the teeth's owners, he could have simply taken them. Thus, he WAS being kind to his slaves. It all seems so weird, somehow, that people could have OWNED other people, but slavery had existed for thousands of years! Thank God it's gone now, at least from OUR part of the world.

This isn't just a woodworking site, it's a well-rounded education! I often see something that piques my interest, and end up discovering something with absolutely no connection to wood.

When Stick invited me to join this forum he said that you folks would be a good resource to get some woodworking questions answered.  This other stuff e.g. history, cooking recipes, humor, etc.  is a BONUS!!!
