A couple hundred??? anything NEAR that nice would set you back well in excess of $1,000 around here! And I'm talking real US dollars, not Canadian Tire money! Beautiful piece of furniture.

@John Morris....well have you got it home yet?:P

First modifications will be 2-4 small LED puck lights mounted in the top of the hutch to illuminate inside.

then installation of an LED strip lamp under the upper hutch to light the "work surface area"

Probably will need to make some wooden chisel holders then mount to the back below the hutch

Thanks guys, the top I could built in some slanted hand plane supports after removing the very top shelf. Behind the slanted hand plane boards, could be a compartment for the plane irons and accessories. Just thinking out loud here.

Or kind of something like this built into the top hutch area.

Just a thought about the slanted tool rack, you could use some hinges behind the upper portion and attach the hinges to the back of the cabinet or build supports to each side so that it would act as a drawer.  You would have to reach around behind if you make it like a drawer.  Of course, the back of the cabinet may have to be reinforced to accommodate hinges.

Reviving this old Topic, I have had many ideas in the past, one of them is to convert a cabinet or hutch into a hand tool storage cabinet or area. I am still interested in doing this and my interest was sparked again today as I perused Craigslist in my area. These old hutches are "out of style" thus the low pricing, as I stated before, I could not build these at what they are selling them for, solid rock maple, solid maple, American made, sturdy and in my eyes are still stylish, specially for use in a shop or garage to house my hand tools, now that I have a truck I could now pick one up, the only thing is, room in our garage. But I do love these old hutches, specially for repurposing into tool storage.

This hutch is $200, solid Rock Maple everything, I see a lot of potential in this one as a conversion.

Solid Maple $250

Solid Maple $400

I love this one, $500. A ton of potential for plane tills, small tool storage, sharpening supplies storage, saw till, and much more, all hand tools condensed into one single area.

How about a clean palette? Make it what you want it to be! Best part, it's free, curb pick up. :)

Just a few idea folks, I am still motivated to do this, I would love to repurpose an old hutch for my hand tools storage.

John, that can't be your reflection in the glass of the cabinet.  That guy had hair! :throbbinghead:
