September 23, 20187 yr Popular Post Planning and organizing my work space, I am going over in my head different ways to build, or not to build, storage for my hand tools. I have gone over in my head a whole bunch of ideas, and one thing I always love to think about is re-purposing old cabinets for my storage solutions. I currently have old kitchen overhead cabinets now, where my finishing supplies and hardware is stored, they were given to me by a buddy at work years ago, and they have served me well. I was looking through local ebay sales in my area for antique cabinets, that I could reconfigure to fit my hand tools, and I came across this old pine cabinet for $285 bucks on Ebay. The lumber would cost that much to build it, and then my time, of which I have very little, it would be nice to just have this cabinet, and retrofit some dividers into it for my hand planes, and shaves and braces etc. I think this would be a really fun project wouldn't it? I could most definitely make this work for my hand tools storage.

September 24, 20187 yr Hello John That's an excellent idea. I have used several of the old kitchen cabinets in my shop and basement storage areas. hat
September 24, 20187 yr Author Thanks guys, the top I could built in some slanted hand plane supports after removing the very top shelf. Behind the slanted hand plane boards, could be a compartment for the plane irons and accessories. Just thinking out loud here. Or kind of something like this built into the top hutch area.
September 24, 20187 yr Popular Post Built the til as freestanding and then place it in the top of the hutch . This will allow you to place it somewhere closer to bench if your work arrangement changes.

September 25, 20187 yr John the hutch is beautiful. Is it old or a reproduction? The finish is what makes it look so good in my opinion.

September 25, 20187 yr Author Looks like at one point it had white paint, and was stripped and clear coated, but it's still cool.
February 1, 20197 yr Author Popular Post Found another possibility! The timing may be right this time, I actually have a couple hundred bucks in my nightstand and this one is selling for a couple hundred bucks. And it's local. Hmmmm This would make a wonderful hand tool storage cabinet after some tasteful customization. Hand tool storage upper cabinet, small drawer storage below, and a hand tool tuning work surface at the table top, along with lower storage for the rest of whatever. Beautiful solid maple, with years of patina.

Also I can see tilted till in the upper for my hand planes and such, and hand saws, the table top for sharpening and such. The lower for jigs and shooting boards storage and such, just thinking out loud without much thinking.
