May 8, 20188 yr Popular Post This wood is just so pretty, it makes me look like I almost know what I am doing. I am a novice at best but I enjoy it so..... This is about 3" tall and 5-1/2" wide.

May 9, 20188 yr Wow Jim, that is awesome, I love clean work, and simple lines, it's what I live for in woodworking. And you have certainly captured that! I am in your same boat, I need beautiful wood to make my work look beautiful. Hey, we know how to leverage nature don't we! All kidding aside, turning bowls and making them hollow, is a skill set that takes time to achieve, and you have been achieving my friend! Thanks so much for sharing here with us.
May 9, 20188 yr Author @HandyDan thank you my friend! @John Morris walnut and bocote are definitely my favorites and it has a lot to do with nature giving me a head start with the natural beauty of the wood. I am becoming more patient in my turning, not settling for thicker bottom and sides. It's really satisfying to turn a well balanced bowl with consistent thickness that feels good to the touch. Thanks for your kind words.

Thinner is very satisfying but even better is using free wood and there are some very nice ones just waiting for you to find . And then when you get known as a turner people will ask you if you want wood or just drop it off. I got some white oak and river birch from the tree guys working on neighbors trees yesterday.
May 9, 20188 yr Author @Gerald I've seen people who always promise and make a point of returning the favor of free wood with a bowl or special item they turned as a way of saying thanks. I think it's a wonderful practice and something I will certainly do.... as soon as it happens to me!
May 10, 20188 yr Fantastic job Jim. You turned (pun may or may not be implied) that chunk of beautiful wood into a gorgeous piece of art. Thanks for sharing with us!
May 13, 20188 yr Jim, I don't know how I missed this one! Beautiful turning! I love the shape of your bowl- inside and out. That's going to make a mighty fine display piece in the show case!!
