April 7, 20188 yr Popular Post Last one of these for a while, or maybe not. They're fun to do. Maple with ash end caps. Five letter code. The pattern on the border rings was drawn in Delta Cad and Inkscape, I call it "star chain". The pointer is a generic Celtic pattern I cabbaged off the web. It's crazy how some projects get almost addictive. I have other things I need to be doing but these are just so much fun! Steve
April 7, 20188 yr By George, I think you've got it! Really nice. Do you change the code for each of these you've made? Is is possible to incorporate two codes within one box? Not sure why you'd want to do it, just curious.

I just wasn't happy with how tight the rings were on the first box. I will still show the first one and talk about what NOT to do with it. As for doing two codes, that would be problematic I think. In my mind, the only way to do ONLY two codes would be to put two notches in one ring only. All of the other rings would still be the same. If I were to put two notches in each ring for a completely separate code that would result in a few dozen possible combinations I think. In the interest of full disclosure this box is a great example of serendipity. The dots separating the pattern and the pointers was a save. I accidentally burned a dot where I didn't want it and added the other three dots to hide the mistake. I liked the result enough that detail will be added to the others I'm making. Steve
April 10, 20188 yr This should be made into a blog post 'How To'. I would love to see how you did this.

To give credit where it's due, I followed the method Carl Jacobson uses in his videos on making a cryptex. He has three videos on the subject and all three are worth watching. The lettering I did with a home made rotary laser engraver. As for the box itself I do a couple things slightly differently and flip flop a couple of the steps but that is mostly personal preference. Here is the last video Carl did on making one of these. Steve
