Now im digging deeper and i feel tis is a custom made (to specs) checkering chisel or saw for gunsmithing and carving. Similar to this....

You'll notice from the picture that our object is apparently NOT sharpened on the hook back section.   My guess is that it started out much like this one;

image.png.9ea8b1bcde34c9a23ba62ee087ac072c.png

and that the curve (belly) was sharpened away over time (much like many old very heavily used and sharpened knives).   I thought about cutting away the curved part of this one but don't have the ideal image software so that it showed straight from one point to the other...you'll see that it's virtually identical to our guest.

The most compelling answer yet, now we have to go the extra mile, contact a seasoned chip carver, and get their opinion, or several chip carvers to get a general consensus, and/or a website of collectible chip carving tools etc etc. Verifiable references win the grand prize!

I Have been trying to find more info on it and have a few emails out on it.  I do have this reply from a carving forum.  Would it be enough?

Forum Reply:  I have one from the now defunct AMT company. It has been surprisingly useful.

I believe this is a variation of a leather embossing iron. Primarily used for saddle makers

Over-thinking this a bit?:unsure::rolleyes:

Nowadays, you use a razorblade holder to trim the edges of veneers where they overlap at a corner.....that is all this tool does.   Just run it along an edge, to trim the excess veneer off.    Was made before them Plastic holder thingys came out.:ph34r:   Sharp ends allowed you to reach right into a corner, or..follow a curved edge.  Simple...

I put out five emails to carvers and chip carvers.  Only got one reply which is the one I already listed.

I asked if he could send me a picture and he did.  I had listed the suspect from this thread and the newer ones I found and it turns out to be this.  So his is evidently newer.

I also thought it may be a trimming tool for wallpaper hangers but could find no evidence of that either.  Here is as close as I came in that venue.

No successful answer was given. The research and verification is lacking.

We will go to a draw for an MWTCA Membership.

I go with Sticks' suggestion, a small whaling harpoon for catching fish in an aquarium.

Congrats!   Very interesting on the newsletter side and their directory just came out.   I certainly didn't realize they had been around so long.  :)
