But as far as paint vs. clear finish -- all current fads.    I read this week that granite is no longer a current top choice for countertops.   Before granite it was Corian, now it's ??? (quartz?)

ANTIQUES SHOULD NOT BE PAINTED.

PAINTING THEM IS A STUPID PERSONS CHEAP WAY OUT.

OF COURSE REPAIRS ARE HARDER ON STAINED WOOD, TAKES A CRAFTSMAN TO DO IT RIGHT.

DID I MENTION I HATE THIS NEW "PAINTED WOOD"?

You are allowed to hate it, but a lot of antique furniture, from Louis XIV to Windsor chairs was originally painted.   And it's not always easier to repair a painted piece (take that from someone who has repaired a lot of it)

I have a friend who builds chests and other furniture similar to the one above. But, his coloration is done via marquetry. No paint.

Here is one of his smaller pieces.

And, if anyone is interested in the craft, here's the school he has.

another reason not to paint...

I am surprised how much French I remember, 48 years later, having never used it much.   On the other hand, I was determined to not fall behind in a language and spent as much time studying French as I did the rest of my college subjects put together, including my first theoretical math classes, differential equations, linear algebra, and number theory, and my computer programming classes.

I don't remember that one Al, but I still remember Frère Jacques and I sweetly remember mom singing it as well when I was a wee lad.
