January 20, 20188 yr My neighbor across the cove got all his wires eaten down to the bare wires all through his attic showing in long sections and they eat the wires on his boat motor. Both repairs cost him a bundle. They use to joke at me for I despised the squirrels for eating our almonds before they got half grown and the pecans before the shucks would open up. They like to put out food so they could sit and watch them play. By that time I had started trapping them and hauling them to the other side of the lake.. After the seventh squirrel last year we started getting lots of pecans but was too late for we never got one almond off of three trees.... which comes earlier in the season than pecans. Now I realized its quicker to shoot them in the cage and save the 12 mile or so round trip which I try to do when no one is around here or where I let them out at the boat launch around the lake.
January 20, 20188 yr Now I realize some traps are not worth anything when trying to catch squirrels. You need to get the ones that trip with a small amount of pressure and some traps are built too cheap for the squirrels can pry some doors open and escape. The one I like has a door in each end but I only use one door and leave the other wired shut. It is also big enough to trap raccoons but its a good idea to go wire the door shut after he gets in there or else they are strong enough to tear up a cage.
January 20, 20188 yr Those bushy-tailed rats have cost me several feeders over the years. Came home the other day and found this. Replaced the roof with plexiglass. John

True, but I had the PG (acrylic?) on hand. 39 minutes ago, HandyDan said: Good old rat traps work well too. Also true, but after a couple of little songbirds got whacked in mouse traps, I refuse to use any spring-type traps where birds could get to them. John

I let the squirrels alone and they usually stay away from the house. I am fishing for chipmunks and the chord does fine for them. Never caught a squirrel yet.
