I see, it actually was a calculated mis-direction statement to throw him off...pretty sneaky!

Three coats of BLO...hinges are on.  a stand-in for a latch..

Hook swings down into the "loop", will do for now..

I HATE doing hinges....even broke a bit in my Yankee push drill...grrrr

Right now, it is sitting on the desk's top.....may just call this done....unless I find a better latch BEFORE the weekend

Yep., afraid you'd say that. Most all the drills I stumble on is either missing that one or has one broken down to a stub...I'll check tomorrow to see what I have.

Wonder if one could grind the base smooth, drill a 1/16" hole in the center and either super glue or epoxy a standard bit back in? Trick would be drilling the 1/16" hole on center w/o having a small lathe.

Only lost a little bit off the end, may be able to sharpen it up, and use it a wee bit longer......Tractor Fest is coming again (Labour Day) and I MIGHT be able to scrounge another drill..with bits.   Have to stand there and shake the handle until one rattles a bit...

...BTDT many times...bought a very old Yankee North Bros yesterday mainly for the bits and did just as you described...has 8 of them including the 1/16; well if you count the 1/4" above the mounting shank

That was my thought, too. What are the dimensions of this box? Looks like it would hold enough for all the spooks and goblins on Halloween!

Somehow, it looks even bigger in the photos. But it still holds enough candy to put my sugars WAY over the top!

Box and the desk have been delivered to the church this morning...neither  Pastor was there this morning....but....they WILL be back next Sunday....
