Had a little time before the noon-ish Road Trip.....decided to get a few things done, IF I could...

Stanley 45:   May be an extra long bolt in one of the spurs....I honed the cutter up and re-installed it.    Had to adjust the fence a bit, too.

Jigs:   First off, this is a WORK bench, not fine furniture.    Needed a way to hold the parts still, long enough for the grooves to be milled..596be7972abdf_shortjig.jpg.72e90b0c4fc74418319ab438f5098c49.jpg

"Short Jig".  Long one across the back will stay there.  Had to add washers to the screws after a while, they kept burying themselves into the wood..

596be836e374a_45setup1.jpg.46a9352737e0acb1cc75b42d362029ed.jpg

Stanley 45  and the first groove, turn the part around...

596be8805c53b_2grooves.jpg.483f01aee91f6f74cdef52796afef746.jpg

And run the second one.  Got both of the short ends done...time to reset the jig a bit..

596be8d4aeec5_longjig.jpg.0751301120b9cc7eae48eba459b13cc2.jpg

And groove the two sides, top and bottom..

596be923b66b7_dryfitgrooves.jpg.7d4947c46ca00c9ade66cf18ac3e9a17.jpg

Do a dry fit to see how the grooves line up....Ok, time to reset the 45..

596be97859a92_reset45.jpg.e129260d468aa6d8d96a79409afab748.jpg

Kind of wide stance, should have added the cam rest....This is for the third groove596be9d08dc92_thirdgroove.jpg.9ab592ab63a2980854645011f44b92dc.jpg

This will be the lip on the lid.  When I cut the outside groove just below this, I can split off the lid, and have a dust seal...

Long sides first, then the short ones..

596bea4ec0b1b_shortthird.jpg.802f8097972e406b7f0dfc4e684b351d.jpg

I used a pine scrap as a story stick..

596bea8bb5ac5_storystick.jpg.f3b7fcc6f91d52fc7444bd9600e5fc92.jpg

As both panels needed to be cut to size.  This could show me how wide and how long.  Got the top one to size, but...

596beaecceae1_toothick.jpg.ef363fb69deb514653391b1625fbb5b6.jpg

Need to bevel the edges so they will fit....new jig needed!

596beb4e701ab_newjig.jpg.57362b2e704d01d2ca6f354b9fa86cd5.jpg

Line is 1" back from the end.  Bevel is by that plane.   I go at an angle to the end.   I run both ends first...

596bebc23c7e4_fitchecks.jpg.91492122816a1866c64651905f7c0b30.jpg

Little wavy ( so was I...) test fit seemed to be ok...596bec0546487_dryfit.jpg.fc6a23699467b08dec5ca74703ecfc59.jpg

may need to plane an edge or two..little tight.   Now, about that bottom panel..

Was going the fancy route, it is just the bottom of a box....Once it was cut to size.

rebates.jpg.1b6c11cfe09d3d1112c15461cdff8fe7.jpg

I used the bandsaw to rough out the ends, clamped it up into a new jig...

toys.jpg.b62861bc64da7c793788ccbd33c2fa82.jpg

I was going to try to use the #78, it didn't want to do the job...I used that marking gauge to "cut" a line the wooden shoulder plane could follow.

Held at a slight tilt until it starts cutting nicely along the line, I could bring it back to vertical and make the rebates.  That Miller Falls plane?

596bedb4c9752_cleanup.jpg.748c0eab42113c47624b0753d812148c.jpg

Board was rough sawn....not anymore...Been making a lot of shavings today..

shavings.jpg.b014c416ef079ac290ff1246f1214dec.jpg

Tried to keep up.    Those curly ones are from the shoulder plane...LOTS of them.   Got this swept up, stuff cleaned up, had a 12:00 road trip to do...

Not to bad of a morning's work.   Maybe after a while, I just MIGHT try a glue up?

Stay tuned

(Just like the Army...we can foul up more by Lunch than most people do in a day..)  0900 to 1200 for this one...

Right now, I am working on the first Guinness Draught...ICE COLD at that....may need a second one?

Went to the shop for a bit....panels were fine tuned for a better fit...sanded a bit on the top panel..

Then...

the..fight

began..

596c0daaedee7_leftside.jpg.52b2a319e92946587e62b41439abab78.jpg

In the shop, there are 5 pipe clamps, 5 "F" style clamps , and two LARGE  "C" clamps...went I was done smearing Elmer's around..

center.jpg.87d024a914cb09c26eaae706d57679e6.jpg

I had two pipe clamps left...that cordless Red & Black toy in the background?   That be Mega-Mouse, my sander at the moment..

596c0e7eefd4f_rightside.jpg.ec0a559b638f2bcb8c07a06c8fb5379d.jpg

Can't do any more work at the bench, right now.   Will let this sit over night.

Happens to be a Thunderstorm moving through the area,  hoping it isn't another Gulley-washer....time for Guinness #2..

Stay tuned....

Great Looking Work!!

Whew, you wore me out just reading today's posts on this project let alone doing the work!

Remember, tomorrow is Monday...No Shop Zone Day!:P

The storm that moved through was really rough up here. 1" of rain in about 25 minutes, and quarter size hail along with extremely strong winds. We didn't seem to suffer any damage (despite the fact I had forgot to close the barn) but I'm sure if I get out later there will be some in the area. It was hot rodding toward you when it pulled out up here. Hope you got through it OK.

Well, I was just going to take some supplies to the shop tonight, I really was...

supplies.jpg.fdda4a3dacfe7523ae1e16b0bdf9863b.jpg

and...install a couple parts on the Langdon Mitre Box..

596d83a6e04b5_stockholder.jpg.de1d6a65922a29ba05789e7db95790cc.jpg

I already had two 3/8' by 16 carriage bolts, finally found two connectors that fit.   Might as well install them.  Then sometime, I can make the bolts for the tops  of them.    May try to round the edges a bit?   But...something down there was calling my name..

596d8451292e0_ClampitJed.jpg.e6e01ec678adbe47514b8b5418884b28.jpg

The box wanted to be set free of all those clamps...

596d84873dcbe_topview.jpg.29bc4380a88ede5d8da0cd3f888c220e.jpg

Yep, a tad ugly..

bottom.jpg.646992aa94551a0c76098d50b7c53abf.jpg

Real ugly.   Well, I did have a new 80 grit belt for the sander...old one was slick as can be...I could flush the fingers down a bit?

596d852b9402d_theCrew.jpg.13fd10e4263adead435876c5568bda01.jpg

Then this Motley Crew shows up, wanting some work...Re-adjusted the fence, made a bunch of shavings..the fan kind of spread those around..

shavings.jpg.c9691d04c1db9e852259cc6f4c1bc77b.jpg

This is just half of them...Next thing I know, there is a groove running around the outside of the box..

groovy.jpg.4e19dd5984fc27f1d8ea1d6a6971e38b.jpg

Fingers are flush with the sides, a groove has been run...edges have been rounded over a bit with that little block plane..

Methinks it is time for a cold Guinness Draught....or two?  Maybe I might make that Sunday deadline yet?

Will have to see what is on the schedule for Tuesday, now...stay tuned

Face it Steven, you're a woodshop junkie!:P Oh, I know you try to stay away especially on Monday's but then it's "OK, just ONE quick swipe with the little block plane and I'll quit..." then try as you might, you look over and see the "45" and the shavings begin to fly...

Now, go look at yourself, you're covered in sweat and thin wood curls, smell like maple or cherry, maybe even a hint of BLO, Mountain Dew on your breath, probably a pencil still stuck behind your ear...man ya' got it bad...what's it gonna be tomorrow, more wood shavings? Sanding dust? BLO? Varnish? Rust from an old saw or plane? I can see it now, that DW router just sitting on the bench...what more can I say?;)^_^

OH, BTW, Candy box is looking good...looking forward to the "parting of the halves..."

Well, went to the shop for a bit, intending to see how well it can be cut apart.....had to use the backsaw on the ends..mot a good sign..bottom of the box wasn't all that bad..

596e3e3d8b43e_bottomhalf.jpg.3c4b8469a3010243acc888b97751110b.jpg

Used the shoulder plane to thin the lip, until the lid would just slide on...even did a bit of detail..

detail.jpg.585439195f19cb7e07b6aa47b67e39a7.jpg

Looked at the ends of the lid....ugly!    Turned out, the groove had taken a crooked path....needed fixed.    Had some old Cherry scrap sitting around.

I demoed out the lips on the ends...then bandsawed a replacement out of the Cherry scrap..  more glue, more clamps...596e3f70ec7d4_fixedend.jpg.68c7b3e11391428603898971041191b1.jpg

The front and back lip is ok...at least they fit..

.sides.jpg.a154df42acd2819c598c21736b17d8f5.jpg

The patches are shaped like "c"..more like these..[ ...]  and will fit the lip on the box.   merely have to clean up the outsides, when the glue is done...

Will leaves these to fix..

holes.jpg.b088be11b97d8dda5e70dcda234116e1.jpg

Where the grooves ran through...still had bits of the Cherry scrap....

plugged.jpg.f20e7d75d5a3a563949ab92f80150b64.jpg

Then fill the small openings with a bit of Elmer's and then a layer of  Cherry sawdust.    Then sand smooth..

sanded.jpg.0f200506f5ef7a562b600647819863fe.jpg

Holes?  What holes?   I also found the hinges I thought I would use, buried on the saw bench...parts.jpg.51b5aa1444999b7dd485315d295b1cbb.jpg

Hmm, may not work..too small one direction, not big enough another....may have to go looking at hinges, again..

waiting on the glue...stay tuned

Only a true craftsman would make a save like this! Kudos!

596ebbac8164a_2ndcoat.jpg.bf9f012160bd6bd27d7005d4092efe55.jpg

Maybe THIS will be the front?   Maybe...as for that thing to the right......

596ebc08f1bbf_LewsMallet.jpg.afefcbcb7912f3a950acfe5219826d59.jpg

It was getting a bit rough around the edges, from all that hard work...so it also got a coat of BLO...

Need to install the hinges, and the latch...after that smelly stuff dries out.  Then a coat of gloss varnish...or two?   We'll see.

Stay tuned

Well, unless I looking at it from the wrong side of my screen (which very well could be), I see it on the right:P
