And in the news today... Carrier shipping jobs to Mexico and laying off American workers & Ford moving production of one of their subcompacts to China...

The only thing that matters to the big corporations is the bottom line.  Unfortunately, it does appear that that is also what matters to most of Americans also.

I saw today that Takata (the air bag guys) filed bankruptcy (to the chagrin of some of the lawyers) and their assets were bought by a Chinese company. Of interest in this is that HLN reported that Chinese company was headquartered in Michigan (!?)

Every time I leave that store I say a big Thanks to tricky Dick Nixon for opening up China for trade, the best thing he ever did. I think I over spent my little pension , but good thing that this week is the end of the month, and I put a big Bean and Ham soup on to slow cook before I left, that will last me most of the week.. Really got some good buys too, never have enough screw drivers and pliers. And those digital calipers too, I have 3 or 4 already but can't pass them up for that price, can't sesm to find them when i lay them down, eventually I will have enough for one by each tool.

No surprise, we all saw this coming over a year ago! There was no way Takata was going to survive this travesty.

Meanwhile, everyone is stuck with defective air bags, their lives are potentially in danger, and the Chinese will probably continue to use the same inferior design. Meaning the American people will continue to put themselves and their families in danger just to have a new vehicle. Oh, well, we all remember a time without seat belts and air bags, so I guess it is no more dangerous now, than it was then. :(

I actually voted against the seat belt and helmet laws here in California.

Got a FB post from Paul Sellers yesterday.  He'd bought a Two Cherries brand saw (that he had always considered quality) and it cut terribly.

Unfortunately, just because the brand name was once a sign of quality, it is no longer a given. With the acquisitions, mergers, buy-outs constantly going on, it is generally the quality that is the first to suffer. I'll just mention; Porter Cable, Delta, on and on.

Most equipment, no matter what the brand name is, come out of the same factories, off the same lines, with minor configuration changes. Yes, they may have varying degrees of quality, depending on the buyers specifications, but they are essentially the same tools. I see and hear about Taiwanese made bandsaws, jointers, planers, etc., with quality almost equal to, or in some cases exceeding quality tools of the past.

Would I take a Taiwanese made Luguna bandsaw over an Italian made one? No! but the former is not a total piece of junk either. If I was in a commercial business...the best I could get, as it will eventually pay for itself. As a hobbiest, that Taiwanese Laguna might last me my lifetime at a lower cost. It is all a matter of balancing cost vs. return.

Looks very similar to one of SawStop's sales pitches.

Unfortunately, it is now a fact of life. Although I am pro American and buy that way when possible, it doesn't alter the fact, that, there are some quality pieces coming out of Taiwan. Do I like that fact, NO, but you don't always get a choice. Realistically, just before companies like Delta moved off-shore, they were making some pretty shoddy tools and putting them on the market.

Ultimately, it just plain boils down to which of the brands/models are better or have better features then what else is available.

Made in the USA doesn't necessarily mean better quality. Back in the 70's I worked for Case Cutlery (Case Knives). I look at what they sell now and shake my head. The knives that I see being sold would have NEVER made it past the final inspection back then. Yet, people still buy because it is made in the USA.
