Things must be more upscale since I went through there in 1962.

I'm sure it still is that way Herb. I'm no resident so I'm just going off what I read and watch.

That being said, the folkart and fine Woodworking community is flourishing there. That region is home to the finest Windsor chair builders the world has ever known. The Windsor chair is hardly rustic.

That was my point,John, neither are yours, they deserve a setting more in the colonial style than a backwoodsy setting.

I would suggest the following guidelines:

- Enough information as to what the business is.   If your business is Artiana, someone can't tell whether you are a woodworker, an accounting firm, or a bank.

- Likewise, don't just make up a word.

- Don't be too specific in case you want to branch out.  "John's Mission Style Rockers" is going to lock you in.  Oh, you do tables, too???

- Don't tie yourself to a location.  "Bedford Woodworking" is a miss if some day you move from Bedford to Springfield, half an hour away.

- If you ever have plans to get a partner or sell, probably avoid your name.  Oh, you're Scott Brown, why is your company "Charlie's Woodworking?".

Courtland Chairs-better than they have to be

What Lew said is really good. I saw a sign the other day that said "Linda's", and I thought, "Wonder what she does! I had a foreign car parts business, and the importer's advice on naming it was: Make sure that people don't have any question about what your business is. I named it Imported Car Parts Co.; so you should make sure that the name reflects the business accurately.

Let me ask you a question.  What is your target buyer?  As I see it, your chairs are "high end" so I'd aim at that audience and probably leave the word craft or crafts out of the name.   Pick a name that you like.  When I picked Above and Beyond WoodWorks, it actually came from my kite building days.  I chose the name because initially, I built and sold kites to fund a mission's project and God's message went above and beyond because of the kites.  Pick a name that pleases you.  With your quality, the name will be unimportant.

keep the @xxxxxx.com short...

I thought of a few more considerations:

- (the one that started this post) Make sure you can get the website URL reflecting your name

- make sure you can get the DBA or business name (e.g., LLC) registered in your state

- make sure you are not impinging on copyright or trademark, e.g., you probably won't get away with Trader Joe's Chairs (for long)

- make sure you can get the email address you want, if you are using something like gmail, hotmail, or yahoo mail

- use correct spelling and punctuation,  Smith Masonary and Patio's sends the signal you are not professional
