June 1, 20178 yr Howdy folks, my family and I here sitting around and throwing out names for my business restart up. For years, the last 25 years I have had the name Courtland Woodworks and I owned the url www.courtlandwoodworks.com I lost the url, and I want my business name to be the same as my url for a website showcasing my work. I have to have Courtland in the name somewhere, it's my grand dad's name. And it's my middle name. The main production of my shop is chairs, and other furniture accessories, but mainly chairs. So I am putting out a calling to you guys, can you help me with some business name ideas? Here are some we came up with, none of them sound appealing to me. courtlandcrafts.com (business name, Courtland Crafts) courtlandartsandcrafts.com (business name, Courtland Arts and Crafts) courtlandrockers.com (business name, Courtland Rockers) courtlandchairs.com (business name, Courtland Chairs) One I was partial too, but my family struck it down, was courtlandwoods.com or Courtland Woods. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated, don't be afraid to get wild, the more creativity the better! Hey, if we end up using your idea, we'll throw a one year subscription for Woodcraft Magazine your way! Thanks for any ideas folks!

June 1, 20178 yr I'd reverse some of the names to "Chairs by Courtland" or "Rockers by Courtland". Folks looking for a specific item might find it faster if Google hits the specific item first.

June 1, 20178 yr I think if you go with "chair something" or "something chair" you are limiting your offerings and limiting the people that will find you on the web. I also think if you go with "arts & crafts" you are doing the same. When I think a&c, I do not think about fine furniture and such - likewise, when I think fine furniture I do not think about bird houses and cutting boards. If you want all of the web hits to investigate further, imho you need to be generic enough to make them come to your site to begin with. I like John Courtland Woodworks; subdivided into two (or more) branches - Fine Furniture by JCW specializing in chairs, tables and furniture accessories and Arts & Crafts by JCW specializing in beautiful craft items, etc. etc. Good luck with it John, Cal

Since I do not have a brick and mortar for folks to walk into, virtually all sales will be done via internet. So the name of the business must fit into the url as well. courtlandwoodworks.com was so catchy, but like I said, it's gone. We are mulling over your suggestions, thanks guys! Keep em coming please!

June 1, 20178 yr Play "customer": how do they find you? Not the familiar, but the strangers. Search for yourself, or better yet have someone who doesn't know wood suggest how they would search. Use their key words on several search engines. What pops up? Add "Courtland" in there somewhere.

Nooooo! Gene, what you are asking is not sane. First of all, their algorithms are a mystery to anyone, if anyone states they have cracked the code to Google search, they are lying. If I start researching their stuff, it'll be a rabbit hole I do not want to go down. I do have a good handle on what works though. The name in a url is not as important as the content. I could have a website named chevymotors.com, but if it's packed full of content for woodworking, anyone who searches for woodworking, will get to me. I do know this, Google puts 99% emphasis on content, 1% on url .com name.

June 1, 20178 yr Author Ok gents, new rules, throw aside any concerns for search words, googling, etc. Don't worry about that stuff. Just a cool name is all I need from yall! I'll take care of how to get folks to my website. I'm counting on yall!
