John Morris Posted January 16, 2017 Report Posted January 16, 2017 Good Monday Morning! In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Many of us get to stay home from work today, I am one of them. To view a brief history of the man, please see Martin Luther King Jr. (A history.com page) We also happen to have a scroll saw pattern of this historical giant in our American culture. So I'll get to the point of this weekly topic, What did you get done in your shops over the weekend, and what plans have you for the week ahead? We've seen some great projects the past week, so we know your all busy and productive in your shops. This topic is a great place for a weekly check in, to show us what you have been up too, so please post away, images, projects, life, family, it does not have to be woodworking related, did you take a vacation? Did you see a great movie? Anything! Personally I was able to make it out to the shop yesterday and cobble together a weaved seat for the shaker stool I built a couple weeks ago. As some of you may know I had a little accident running up my stairs here at home, and I fell up the stairs and banged up my wrist pretty good. It was quite the challenge holding parts of the weave material with a bad hand and shoving the weave through with the good hand, but I got her done! You can see the stool in the Gallery. Adopt-a-Family Debrief Our 2017 Adopt-a-Warrior-Family for Christmas project has wound down, the last check of the raffle proceeds is going out to the Akin family, ma and pa Akin will have enough in the last disbursement to hire a babysitter and head out for a much needed night together and have a nice dinner. At least that is what I'll suggest they do, but more than likely they'll use if for the kids. The details and breakdown of the project and financial statement will be available this week. We'll post it in a separate topic from the project topic. Leaderboard Check out your Leader Board for some interesting statistics, it's always fun to see who or what is moving and shaking in our community. Featured blog Please check out Gerald's wonderful blog on building a cherry entertainment center! Thank you I'd like to thank everyone here who comes into our little home away from home who contributes and participates in our topics in all the areas of our woodworking community website. Our website is a tool for woodworkers to share their knowledge, lend council to other woodworkers, and to share our projects with each other. It's always nice to get an atta boy isn't it? Without you, the contributor, we don't have a community, it's because of your contributions that we are growing and becoming stronger and we are in turn able to provide some help in some way to the men and women who have served our nation. Without you, we don't have sponsors, without our sponsors, we don't have funding to stay live and aid those we can. Remember, this is a truly non profit community, nobody on our staff pockets a single penny, not even yours truly, all proceeds are used to fund our community, keep it live, and help our veterans. Thank you for that folks! Eye candy image of the week In honor of the Holiday today, I found this image of a group of boys working together in 1939 at "Dobbins Vocational School - Class in soldering. [Philadelphia, Pennsylvania]", it's not woodworking, it's metal working, but it shows the boys working together, a moving picture I feel, and symbolic. Meet was rescheduled from Saturday to today due to the ice storm She's qualified for (4) events...50 & 100 freestyle; seeded 16th & 15th, but hey she made the finals...not bad for a sophomore By default & regular season times to date, the two relay teams she participates on 200 & 400 freestyle have made the finals; not sure of seed positions ISHAA restricts participants from participating in more than (4) events per meet/day Her team is 7-0-1 in dual meets & 2-1 in triple meets so far on the season Thanks for asking Edited January 16, 2017 by Grandpadave52 John Moody, Stick486, Cal and 2 others 5 Quote
John Morris Posted January 16, 2017 Author Report Posted January 16, 2017 @Grandpadave52 that is awesome!!!! Making the finals is an accomplishment, a big one, especially in swimming. That is one of the most demanding sports on the face of this earth. If you got the time Dave, can you please explain 7-0-1? Grandpadave52 1 Quote

(7) wins, (0) losses & (1) tie...No provisions for a "tie-breaker" in team point scored meets or individual events Even after 5 years now I'm still trying to learn the in/outs of swim meet scoring; was new to me; dual, triple meets and invitational/multi-team events all score points differently; fortunately there is an APP suscription that is real time for each meet & event I know basketball, football, wrestling; baseball...finally learned tennis when daughter played in H.S.; oldest grand-daughter also plays H.S. tennis LarryS, John Morris, Cal and 1 other 4 Quote

I can follow Baseball, ya, baseball, the ball gets hit, a man comes into home, a point is scored, that's an easy one for me. HARO50, Grandpadave52 and LarryS 3 Quote
Gene Howe Posted January 16, 2017 Report Posted January 16, 2017 Nada accomplished this weekend. My get up and go done got up and went. Don't watch a lot of sports but the scoring of most of the olympic type events and tennis has me totally baffled. Any sport or competition that relies on the subjective opinion of judges is incomprehensible to me. Style points??? What's that all about? John Moody, HARO50, Cal and 1 other 4 Quote

Popular Post Marv Rall Posted January 16, 2017 Popular Post Report Posted January 16, 2017 I have been spending much time at my band saw scrolling with a 1/8" blade. Been cutting out 3 dimensional deer----using the technique in which a pattern is glued to the wood block and the companion pattern is glued at 90 degrees----cut one side----tape pieces together---turn 90 degrees and cut companion pattern and voila a deer with fine rack appears as if by magic. Lots of work cleaning up saw marks and attaching a base. Probably made about 50 so far in the last 2 years. The finished product brings the usual responds "how did they do that?" One of my major interests is repurposing redwood. All my cutouts are made of this amazing wood. All of my redwood is reclaimed from fences, decks etc---All off which exceed 60+ years old. Works for me. Cal, John Morris, steven newman and 5 others 8 Quote
