January 5, 20179 yr I agree with Bob on both points...especially the traffic, seems like quite a bit more here versus Wood (in the last 10 years or so).
January 5, 20179 yr Can't remember ever visiting the Wood forum so, I can't compare. As to the magazine, my subscription lapsed years ago and it's not been missed.

This is the perfect replacement for me, I'm sorry I didn't come here sooner. A lot of old faces and many new keeps me coming here and learning what I can & contribute when I can. The level of craftsmanship that comes from the members shops, ( many basements, garages & out buildings) amazes me. This website has at its heart a purpose and a cause, is easy to navigate and informative. I think the contributions to the many threads are free, open and uncensored. Wood magazine has their own narrative and would edit post as they seemed fit. They made no effort to improve or update their forum and accepted little or no input from its members. As far as a magazine, I think a children's magazine with the address of a local elementary school as the shipping address is a good choice. What an awesome idea!!! Said it way better than me Bob...Thanks! As for a magazine...I've seen and learned more here over the past few months than I've obtained from any yearly subscription I've had...I chose not to renew my Wood Magazine subscription, partly on principle, partly on the extreme high cost versus value...no regrets, but that is my personal choice...I accept and respect others have differing views...
January 5, 20179 yr Popular Post There are lots of good magazines out there but for right now the only one I subscribe to is "WoodCraft". They have been a very good supporter of this site and the cause.

January 5, 20179 yr since it's ok to bash Wood here, here are my 2 cents: i got that mag for about 5 years, and not once did i find a project i either wanted to build. actually, i started a little project once, but gave up 1/2 way thru for other reasons, but the layout of the directions was horrible. my deciding point was they had an issue that was covering a recent lawsuit that a table saw mfr was sued and lost because someone used their saw improperly and cut their fingers off. in the SAME issue they show someone making a cross cut on a table saw....without the blade guard installed. people see pics faster than they read disclaimers in 3 point type. (safety guards removed for clarity). show safe use of tools. always. there is no reason to watch the blade as you rip or cross cut. it'll go thru your wood just fine. really. there are very few cuts that require the blade guard to be removed. when you are done making that cut, put the guard back. taking 4 minutes to do that is far less time than a trip to the ER to find your missing parts and patch you up. they were irresponsible, i called them out on it, and got a brush off. done. and wear eye protection!!

I also subscribe to Woodcraft Mag, and I purchase supplies from Woodcraft, there have even been times where retailer "A" had a sale that put their item 10 bucks lower than Woodcraft, but I still purchased from Woodcraft, they support us and our veterans causes. We also have a subscription to WOOD mag that we enjoy too, Dad still loves his WOOD mags.

January 5, 20179 yr bash/critique..... i'm mostly house broken. one other thing that amused me: Wood tried to be very family friendly, to the point of having a very long list of banned words. one time i was talking about files that you would use to profile wood, and referred to a "bastard file"...they edited it out. it's a common tool name!!! good grief. if you can't teach the children what tools are called, how are you going to teach them how to use them?

May 4, 20179 yr Just received the sorriest Wood Magazine ever today! Additionally, it is thinner too! Must be on their way out. It's kinda like when a restaurant starts losing money, they go up on prices, and in the not too distant future, they close their doors!

May 4, 20179 yr Oldwoodie, I think that's the fate of all the published magazines in the digital age. Not making excuses for Wood, but all the ones I've read regularly in the past seem to be fading. Popular Mechanics was a long time favorite, but it was losing weight and now comes out (I think) 10 times a year instead of monthly. The shooting magazines I read all thinned down substantially. So while Wood did some stuff to shoot themselves in the foot, they are just (IMHO) suffering a fairly common malady in the publishing business. It's a little bothersome for me, since I don't like reading articles or watching shows on the computer (don't have any of that other stuff); but it's the way things are going. Talking to my grandaughter, here college text books are not as we know them, they are digital now. Funny thing, they don't seem to be any cheaper than they were 50 years ago!
May 4, 20179 yr Our son got his MBA online while in the AF. Don't think he had to have one real book. All digital.
