Look guys, the question was the two main categories for furniture. When I heard the two very knowledgeable woodworkers Chris and Roy make that statement, I did some deductive reasoning in my own mind,

  • i've made many cutting boards over time for friends (some sent $, some didn't), and more than once i've heard back that they were "too nice to use"   sigh.   you won't ruin them.

who made them 'experts'?

good questions....

"Expert" Modern English. A combination of "ex", meaning former, and "spurt", a fast drip. Hey, if you want to know anything about the origins of the language, just ask me! ;)

Look guys, the question was the two main categories for furniture. When I heard the two very knowledgeable woodworkers Chris and Roy make that statement, I did some deductive reasoning in my own mind, and came to a conclusion that what they stated was accurate. I also, during that time, made a decision to accept the statement they made, I also took into account their years of training in the field of woodworking, and their educational back ground which in my opinion, is very impressive as far as Roy's education is concerned especially. Among his many impressive attributes in his early career was a master house-wright and later director of interpretive development at Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia per the information I gleaned from Wikipedia. He was surrounded by history and education in his early career in woodworking. Personally I put a lot of weight in that. And if he states there are two main categories in furniture called box, and platform, it made sense to me at the time, and it still does. Surely you all can see the simplicity in that statement, and how furniture does truly break down into those two categories.

For myself to accept this statement took only mere seconds, because of what I already knew about the two gentlemen, and the way they made the statement, convinced me they knew what the heck they were talking about.

Now, I cannot verify everything I come across, life would be nothing but verifying if that is all we did, if we could not rely on experts in a specific field of study or discipline. Does that mean I buy everything said lock stock and barrel, no. What it does mean though, that in my own personal life I have come to know professionals and experts in many fields, and I rely on their expertise to disclose knowledge that is new to me, and I usually accept it from them.

Being able to accept what an expert says about any given subject takes years of built up trust, and reliability before I can personally accept what is stated by them, and Roy Underhill has proven to be a reliable source for me to glean knowledge from.

Do you have to trust what Roy says, absolutely not, you have to build up your own trusted reference and education network, but he has always been reliable in my life section of woodworking.

Off my soapbox now, and back to the shop! This is fun guys, I love this type of dueling and sparring in words, keep up the great work guys!

Not offended at all, I am actually trying to spur healthy debate, but no one is taking the bait!

Gents, and ladies. Re reading my long winded reply above, it may have appeared I was a tad bristled. Sorry to all who read it and took it that way. In the spirit of that reply, it was purely fun and argumentive, it's hard to see the big smile on my face as i wrote it. My apology if it appeared I was offended. Quite the contrary. I love big discussion! Cheers and Happy New Year!

Very little offends me.

About time one for pizza dinner. Homemade. Yum.

serious???

Seems I remember a statement from somewhere that if you could build a box then you could build any piece of furniture. Coarse that does not include embellishment.

i do what i do for my own pleasure, and if an item finds a home in my house or another's house, then that's all that matters.

i made a gave away a bowl last year.  one of many i've made over time.  he was about speechless.  i'd call that a win.  does someone else like it?  doesn't matter, it wasn't made for them.  i got paid in a smile and a handshake.  i'd say i was well paid.

This is the best expression you can get to know someone likes what you made.
