The Two Main Types of Furniture

Featured Replies

Can anyone name the two major/general categories of furniture? It's true, all furniture can be narrowed to two main categories, what are they?

No Googling! Your own brain please!

By the way, if you've watched Roy Underhill at all, the answer was in one of his episodes, that's how I learnt of this cool subject!

Look guys, the question was the two main categories for furniture. When I heard the two very knowledgeable woodworkers Chris and Roy make that statement, I did some deductive reasoning in my own mind,

  • i've made many cutting boards over time for friends (some sent $, some didn't), and more than once i've heard back that they were "too nice to use"   sigh.   you won't ruin them.

Close!

The two types of furniture that come to mind are: (1) furniture that is made to look at and (2) furniture that can actually be used.

Dave.

Expensive and cheap!

Wood and plastic?

old & new? ;)

Well thanks for not Googling this one guys! I can tell no one has! The honesty of the folks in this community is un-paralleled.

But, I give ya'll permission to do so now if you still want to figure this out on your own. Otherwise give me the word and I'll give the answer.

Word!

One to support human activities and one to store things.

Indoor and outdoor?

First category is: Box

Second category is: Platform

Box includes all forms that store things such as cabinets and chests.

Platform includes all forms that support something, tables, chairs, sofas etc.

The grand prize goes to Jim! What is that grand prize you ask? Bragging rights! Hey, we run on a shoestring budget around here!

Thanks John. Hoping for a bigger prize tonight in Arizona! Go Bucks!

Upholstered and Case Goods (tables, chairs, free-standing cabinets, chests, dressers, etc.)

Waaaaaaaaaaait a minnit.  The citation for this categorization is a guy who lives in the wrong century?  Or two?  I'd say he's a square peg in a round hole, but shaping square to round is in his wheelhouse.  I faithfully watch Underhill's programs, and I've learned from them.  But I consider it "apocalypse insurance" kind of stuff!

Box and platform?  What about torsion boxes used as tables?  What about tree stumps?  Why is there air?  And what google search words led to that conclusion?  I couldn't duplicate it.  But I will admit that my insight to wood comes from a book that ended, "And the tree was happy."

Boxes and Posts

guess i'm too late to play, was in the shop making some mistakes, and then fixing them....

2 kinds of furniture?  useful and useless.  if it doesn't serve a purpose and fill a need, it's useless.  if it makes your life better, it's useful.

if you have a bunch of books, you don't need a blanket chest, you need a bookcase.  if you have a bunch of blankets, you don't need a dining table, you need a blanket chest.

Good questions Pete, it was actually a combination statement made by Underhill and Chris Schwarz during one of his shows. Here are some thoughts on the subject:

What about torsion boxes used as tables?

Depends on what the main use is for, if it's used as a table, then it fits into the platform category. If it's a box that is used to to support people and or items, it's a platform.

What about tree stumps?

If it's made into a furniture, and used to support people and or items, it's a platform.

As far as googling goes, that was your jobs! I trusted my source to two men in the industry who have a bit of education on this subject. I know Roy is a TV personality, but his education and back ground in the field cannot be easily dismissed, he is a master in the area of history and education on the subject.

I hear ya Pete! It seems so simple don't it, well, somethings really are that simple!:D

If it helps, the title of this topic should have been:

The Two Main Categories of Furniture

was just reading the news during lunch (yummy salad), and there was a headline "experts say...."

who made them 'experts'?

i'm pretty sure i'd fail a college class on woodworking, because i want to do things my way, not the way of another.  what matters is my results.  i'm not building to be the most efficient one around (Ikea has that wrapped up), i'm not designing to make some professor impressed with my carefully crated drawings, i do what i do for my own pleasure, and if an item finds a home in my house or another's house, then that's all that matters.

i made a gave away a bowl last year.  one of many i've made over time.  he was about speechless.  i'd call that a win.  does someone else like it?  doesn't matter, it wasn't made for them.  i got paid in a smile and a handshake.  i'd say i was well paid.
