November 25, 20169 yr Over at the Neanderthal Haven site, there is currently a thread going on about sharpening... Your Ice Scrapers Yep. Posts include the usual about back bevels, flattenning the backs, Bevel up or bevel down. One poster even uses a block plane to refresh the bevel. Others worrying about how sandpaper on a flat board would leave grit inbedded in the scraper's surface, and scratch the glass.. Yep, normal sharpening thread over there...
November 25, 20169 yr Different strokes I guess. Funny, never in a million years would I have thought about sharpening an ice scraper.
November 25, 20169 yr Oh, I've thought about it! Got a dozen or so that don't scrape worth a *****, so now that I know other people do it John.......

November 25, 20169 yr If you have spares on hand, now is the time to sharpen'em, before you need 'em. Seems like a belt sander would do fine. Not exactly a rocket science.
November 25, 20169 yr I did mine last week. Self stick 220 grit on a flat piece of wood. Ice scrapers are more like $5.00 and up.

But, the vehicles are garaged. And, I'm retired. Windshield deicing fluid in the reservoirs work well, too. Turn the defroster on, go back in the house and have another cuppa. By then, the car is warm, a couple squirts of fluid and your good to go.
November 26, 20169 yr We don't get as much snow as we did 40 years ago, only 2 or 3 feet a year, but snow isn't what these scrapers are used on. For snow we have brushes or brooms. Scrapers are for the layer of frost or ice that forms almost every night, and can take 15 minutes to remove from the vehicle windows. You Californians have it made! November 26, 20169 yr Popular Post Leave windshield and rear window deicer in the on position when you leave the car. Start the engine using the remote starter and wait 15 minutes before you're ready to leave.
November 26, 20169 yr When we were working, (pre garage) we'd use a spray bottle in the evening to coat the windshield with the deicing fluid. On the coldest nights, ice would form, but wouldn't adhere. Easy to remove without scraping. Defrosters did most of the work. Then a few sprits from the washer reservoir was all it took.
