It is good if it sucks and sucks if it don't suck.

Here's a set of tools I received as a birthday present. At the time, I didn't think much of them but, they have been very handy for installing small box hinges. They are called Gimlets.

Ah, yes.... my first cordless drills! :D I have a set of those that were probably produced in the early 1900's. MUCH higher quality than the set I got from LV about 35 years ago.

Don't know where my set was purchased. The package said they were made in France.

My deciding factor is "do I have the space for this" my little 16 x 16 chicken coop is really getting crowded. I would love to buy a new SCMS but where would I put it. Yeah I could get rid of something but then I would probably need it for the next project I start. Right now I'm sitting on a $100 HD gift card, $75 in LOWE'S gift cards, $100 ROCKLER gift card and a $25 MENARDS card. I really don't have any thing I have been seriously wanting lately and haven't got a clue what I'm going to get. I need to spend the HD card soon as it expires in JAN.  Recently when I buy a tool or power tool  I look for something that will make a task simpler or more accurate.  I also suffer from good deal perception syndrome (gdps).  Basically if I see something and it's cheap enough it gets to come home with me.

That was from the "Good" Era

Indeed! It has done all kinds of duty over the years...car cleaning, water removal, shop/garage clean-ups and woodworking chores. It is big, bulky and noisy...but...it never fails to get the job done.

We had those on the jobs and they were really abused until the plastic was riddled, but they still worked. I have one I bought in the 80's and never saw the hard use of the ones at work, but still running strong. I used it as a dust collector before I installed one. The noise drove me up the wall though. I even use it to back blow the air filters on my dust collector unit. Cost less than $90. too.

It'll blow the dust outta the shop really quick, too.

I have two vacuums from Craftsman but don't know how old they are.  Rescued them on trash day and one of them needed a plug.  The other one had a new plug but was installed wrong.  The wires were bare to far and would touch and blow the breaker.  Been using it for about 12 years.

That is funny ,Dan.my dad showed me how to replace a plug around 10 yrs.old with a pocket knife. (Don't mean stripping the wire and sticking it in the outlet either,HAhaha, but our pocket knives had a screwdriver in them.

Interesting about the shop vacs....had a "shopvac" brand....and it only had the paper bag thingie inside and when i moved into the house. the the crappy concrete on the basement floor was "dusting"....yeah, i know...but i had no desire to ever see, hear, or communicate with the GC again...   so i bought my first sears vac with the pleated filter (over 25 years ago)...   and it's still running strong...had the "speed" option on the top, although i seldom use it...just blow out the filters outdoors and keep on going.     The top of the 'shopvac" came off and was my first leaf blower (wood bits remover)....lol   it eventually gave up the ghost (i think it was the switch)...   and they wouldn't just sell me a new one...bleh

mmmm.pocket knife with screwdriver....   electrician or scout model???

Anyway, to get back to Ralph's original question...i don't go wild on spending on large power tools; not trying to keep up with anyone.   I will buy smaller hand-tools i see if i think i (or the kids) can use them and the price is right (thank you Restore).
