November 1, 20169 yr WOW, WOW, WOW, Now for the question how robust is the end grain compared to the long grain? I really like the effects of the end grain but I am concerned with their strength. I am about to build cabinets for my shop and may look at end grain rail and style for the doors.

What a clever idea, Micheal, not sure of what you mean by "Robust" I assume you mean strong enough. On my projects , I was concerned about that on the stool,so I beefed it up underneath with a couple of rails. On the other boxes there wasn't a problem. There are lots of ways to construct end grain material, for instance small pieces glued together like a cutting board, strips glued together to make a board, solid pieces crosscut full width, etc., Different thicknesses. make a difference. My suggestion is to make up a sample of what you are going to use and test it out to the types of stress you think it will have to endure and conclude from that whether it is suitable for which you want to use it. Be sure to post pictures and your observations of how it machin s and holds up under the tests you apply to it. Herb

Absolutely . Al, I make most all the hinges, several years ago I bought a disc of making hidden hinges, think it was made bob Rob Corson, and ever since I saw that,I have been hooked on it. On occasion I do use brass ones, Guess I will have to do a thread on my cedar hinge box. Herb

IMHO, these projects have earned a place there. Probably a Tutorial somewhere. If there is not a tutorial, let me know and I will be glad to help you post the picture to the gallery.
