    A "Gripping" Tale

While cleaning weapons the other day, I took a good look at my 1911 and thought to myself, "Those plastic grips just don't do it justice." I then thought, "Hey, I've got this new carving bench that needs to be used." And, so, I started roughing out some grip blanks....... The bench turned out to be exactly what I needed to carve these out. It was the right height, allowed a surface that I wasn't too worried about abusing, and just really gave a rustic feel to the whole process...... I definitely need more practice. I learned a lot about using oak as a carving medium and about customizing grips for a particular person. I need to make another set, but these actually feel pretty good in the hand right now. We'll see what happens in the future....... I still want to know how someone can get this angry over a front sight.......
  3. Today was actually a nice day in the shop. I had time to sit down with my CNC and vCarve Desktop to work on some 1911 grips. I’ve been using my Remington R1 as my test fit piece. These were cut cut but I did t get them sanded and a finish put on them today. I guess I can work on that tomorrow afternoon. mahogany on the top, Purple Heart and Leopard wood on the right. These are all cut from G10 material. Slate color G10 cut with a checking pattern A nice fit on my 1911. Slate G10 Stripes with Mag release cut out. Red and Black G10 with Dots. I sanded this with micro sanding paper then buffed it on my 3 wheel buffer. Nice look. Each set gives the 1911 a total different look. I’ve got to get a few more cut tomorrow. It’s back to work at the Gun Store Monday.

    1911 grips

I wanted to cut and design or modify some grips for my 1911 pistols with my CNC. I was able to download a couple of 3D models to use but they are in igs file format and I can’t import that into my Vcarve Desktop. I don’t have autocad so I’m looking for something to convert the files to dwg files. There are some free converters out there but I’m afraid to use any I don’t know about. Looking for some advice or if someone can convert them for me. I appreciate any help that can be offered. Ive cut one set but they were not sized exactly right.
