Fred W. Hargis Jr 11,061 Posted December 15, 2018 Report I love that table, somewhere my wife caught a pic of one and mentioned to me how much she would like to have one. I threw out that copy of the mag, so I may have to wing it if I build one...sure hope it's as nice as that if I do it. Gunny 1 Quote Link to comment
Gene Howe 34,553 Posted December 15, 2018 Report Thanks, Fred. It's a pretty easy build. Any questions, just holler. Gunny 1 Quote Link to comment
John Morris 22,499 Posted December 16, 2018 Report Absolutely perfection to the nth degree Gene, wow! The grain, the color, the work, it all flows together so well, this is one of thee nicest river tables I have ever seen, no kidding. Quote Link to comment
Gene Howe 34,553 Posted December 16, 2018 Report @John Morris, I was lucky enough to find that huge mesquite slab. It's the wood that makes it, the build was simple. Like the builder. Quote Link to comment
John Morris 22,499 Posted December 16, 2018 Report Where do you get those slabs Gene? Local or mail order? Quote Link to comment
Gene Howe 34,553 Posted December 16, 2018 Report Local...well about 100 miles or so, south. In Casa Grande. The sawyer salvages from anywhere they're clearing for development, roads etc. He also salvages from pecan and pistachio orchards. That particular slab was about 11' long and 3" thick. I bought it for $20. Quote Link to comment

John Morris 22,499 Posted December 16, 2018 Report By the way Gene, you went with glass? I thought you were the one working on the resin river type? Quote Link to comment
Gene Howe 34,553 Posted December 16, 2018 (edited) Report @John Morris I do a lot of resin for inlays AKA, repairs in mesquite. But, not much big stuff. I went with glass because it was simpler. NOT cheaper, though. Edited December 16, 2018 by Gene Howe Quote Link to comment
Mattb0313 17 Posted December 17, 2018 Report Gene, what resin do you use, and where do you get it? TIA Quote Link to comment
Gene Howe 34,553 Posted December 17, 2018 Report Matt, I've used a lot of different epoxys. My favorite is System 3 from these guys. Quote Link to comment
Grandpadave52 20,648 Posted December 18, 2018 Report Gorgeous table Gene. That slab of mesquite has some beautiful grain. Quote Link to comment
Gene Howe 34,553 Posted December 18, 2018 Report Thanks, Dave. IMHO, all mesquite has that gorgeous grain. It's understandable considering it's slow growth and harsh conditions. Quote Link to comment
1fizgig 741 Posted August 7, 2019 Report That's a nice piece of work Gene. I'd love to give resin a crack, but it seems prohibitively expensive without supervision to get it right. Quote Link to comment
Gene Howe 34,553 Posted August 7, 2019 (edited) Report Thanks, Fiz. But, that river is glass. A lot simpler than epoxy. Edited August 7, 2019 by Gene Howe Quote Link to comment
FlGatorwood 9,723 Posted August 7, 2019 Report Kudos. I thought I had posted on this before but I don't see it. I love it as others have so well said and explained. Quote Link to comment
junglejohn 338 Posted August 22, 2020 Report I call myself a wood worker then I see something like this. Absolute perfection. I am not worthy. I am not worthy. Cal, Gunny and Gene Howe 1 2 Quote Link to comment
Gene Howe 34,553 Posted August 23, 2020 Report Thanks, John. It wasn't that difficult. The slab sorta dictated the design. The build was pretty basic. Gunny and Cal 2 Quote Link to comment
Ron Altier 8,003 Posted October 23, 2020 Report Gene, I saw a video on this table (or one just about like it) on Youtube some time ago. If you do some searching you can probably find it too Quote Link to comment
