May 21May 21 Author Making the "Tambour Stiles". The journey continues...So now I made the Tambour Stiles. There are 10 of them. Each one is 1/2" thick x 1" wide x 8-1/2" long.As before, I draw curves with a template on each end so I can "pillow" them.I place pencil hatch marks on the surface so as I pillow I can see what's been done. After pillowing, I use my dowel centering jig to drill mounting holes at each end of all of them. Here you see me pillowing with my block plane, the hole provided at each end, before and after the process.Afterwards I glue in 1" x 1/4" dowels at both ends for all of them. Here's a test fit:Thanks for looking!Stay tuned! More to come ...Cheers!MrRick Edited May 21May 21 by MrRick
May 22May 22 Author So this whole morning was spent applying a stain to all the parts. Next I'll be gluing up sub assemblies. Here's the stain I used:Thanks for looking!Stay tuned! More to come ...Cheers!MrRick
May 24May 24 Author It's Sunday...The journey continues...Just got home from Church. Not alot of time today. All my parts that were shellacked last night were dry so I checked all the pieces for fit. Here all the completed parts now:There are a few imperfections here and there but everything looks pretty good and fits nicely. So I just finished gluing up all the Tambour stiles to their rail frames which make the smaller sides. When it's dry I will will interconnect them with the other rails. Here they are drying with the clamps.Stay tuned! More to come ...Cheers!MrRick Edited May 24May 24 by MrRick
Wednesday at 02:20 PM4 days Author Popular Post It's Wednesday, May 27th and the journey continues ......The sides are complete and now I've glued and assembled them with remaining rails. This is completed the assembly minus the cushion which is yet to come. Next I will make the cushioned top or seat. I make the backer board first.I begin by cutting out a piece of prefinished Baltic Birch 3/4" plywood.Next I need to cutout corner notches for it to follow around the legs. I begin by marking out the cut lines for each notch using my marking pen knife. BTW... this is the same knife that Paul Sellers uses in his wood working.I make knife walls with my chisel. This helps to cut straight when using my Lee Valley saw. Here's the cutting action using the 14 TPI saw...This is a look at the corners notches made:Next, I drill some 3/4" dia holes as shown. This allows compression and expansion of the seat foam when someone sits or places their legs on the cushion. Here's the completed backer board:I have to now run out and buy the foam and size it to this backer board. Then I can start the upholstery. Thanks for looking!Stay tuned! More to come ...Cheers!MrRick Edited Wednesday at 02:23 PM4 days by MrRick
Wednesday at 02:25 PM4 days That's lovely, Rick.RE upholstery, I suck at corners, lol. I keep trying, but I still keep sucking at it. :)
Wednesday at 02:32 PM4 days Author Thanks @Handfoolery! Yeah.. Corners can be tricky. When I made my first footstool it was a little tight trying to get it all in between the framing. Lucky for me that I assembled the completed cushion into framework before the frame assembled was completed. However, this time I completed the framework assembly first and allowed more tolerance for stuffing the completed cushion assembly afterwards. Hope I got it right. Cross my fingers! LOL.
Thursday at 04:56 PM2 days Author It's Thursday, May 28th and the journey continues ......It's getting hot outside. It's currently 70F and getting up to 79 - 80F by noon. It's gorgeous with blue sky but dead still. Not a leaf moving in any tree.So short day today. I ran a tolerance fit check of the backer board. I temporarily placed some spacers in to achieve the gap I want to see all around. This gap will be almost invisible once it's all upholstered and put in place. Thanks for looking!Stay tuned! More to come ...Cheers!MrRick Edited Thursday at 04:58 PM2 days by MrRick
