November 17, 2025Nov 17 Popular Post After having 9 different medical appointments last week (including one trip to the hospital of 90 miles one way) and 4 trips to the pharmacy, this week we're down to 4 medical appointments (and one more hospital trip, albeit closer). This aging thing is just getting worse for Marie and I. That aside, we'll start prepping for the Thankgiving dinner we'll have this year. I think we have more guests than usual as the grandkid's family/friends grow. While I used to enjoy this, that was before i became the chief cook; not so much fun anymore though the family gathering is nice.
November 17, 2025Nov 17 Popular Post Many years ago, I took a "Make a Chair From a Tree" class from Drew Langsner in NC. It was a winter class, so there were just two of us. Drew got his start in woodworking (as a travelling hippy) by apprenticing with a cooper in Switzerland. Despite not knowing any German language, he learned to make buckets and such. Our tools for the week were wedge and sledge hammer, froe, drawknife, spokeshave, chisel, and brace and bit. Monday we started with a log and Friday noon, we had a chair ready to go. Years prior, there was a cooper doing a demo in a shopping mall in WI. He shaped the staves by eye, bound one end, then set the shavings on fire to heat them to get them to bend. A few years ago, we vacationed in KY and did some of the bourbon trail. From small to very large distilleries. Then we found a place that made white oak barrels for them. The staves came off the line (CNC??) a worker put them together, hydraulic press pulled the bands on and then went thru another machine to char the insides. Quite a difference.
November 17, 2025Nov 17 Popular Post Temporarily set aside the "vase of illusion" project until I can get the construction proportions correct. Do have a tiny square platter to turn as a gift for a friend who gave me a chunk of spalted maple. Also working on the traditional gift for the Assistant Director who moved on from our school to a new position.

November 17, 2025Nov 17 Popular Post Picked up two big storage cabinets for my shop expansion project as found on FB Marketplace. Unfortunately, took two trips as they were bigger than I realized and wouldn't both fit in the truck bed with our cap (oops). Should allow for better storage of tools and jigs.
November 17, 2025Nov 17 Popular Post Happy anniversary to you & your wife! Bathroom project is complete & tomorrow I'll go to the basement & install a new water heater because the one we bought 15 years ago decided to start leaking. Just when I thought I was done they sucked back in.
November 17, 2025Nov 17 Popular Post Cleaned up my one old cabinet and laughed at how small it looks next to the new one (actually picked up two of the larger...sure I'll fill them...love enclosed storage). Edited November 17, 2025Nov 17 by BB1

Every now and then a good deal pops up. These cabinets were like new condition and were prices less than half the current sale price locally at Home Depot (and they were already assembled!!).

November 18, 2025Nov 18 Popular Post I'm still working on reorganizing areas of my shop. This part of the wall was taken up by 3 folding tables and extension cords hanging from the 3 hooks at the top of the wall. Total waste of space. I found a piece of pegboard mixed in with some scrap plywood so I made a frame for it and hung it on the wall next to an existing pegboard. I moved two of the hooks down and to the left to hang the 3 folding tables below me sprinkler control box then I built a shelf above the new pegboard to hold the extension cords. This allowed me to better organize me yard tools. Today I started working on a storage box for my sharpening tools.
November 18, 2025Nov 18 Popular Post Week ended our excursion into selling for the next 3 weeks. Did ok but not what was expected. Yesterday afternoon unloaded the truck, cleared a few boxes and did a bit organizing shop. This morning worked on catching up on some paperwork. Had to make a run to town with son . Once we got home started work on connecting ethernet cables in the house. Got to the shop finally and used a chain hoist to lift the second air cleaner into place. At the top of the hoist I had to switch to rope and finally used a turnbuckle to get the last 4-5 inches. That last part was really slow. Maybe get back on the cables tomorrow.

November 18, 2025Nov 18 Popular Post I'm getting all the pieces from the Crafts Tour (2 weekends ago) put away. I've decided to reorganize my shop a bit. I've cleaned all the cans and jars of mixed screws, drill and driver bits plus I'm going to add a new unit of plastic draws for my stash of electrical parts. The basement is warm, my wife just left and will be gone for two days, I should get a lot done, either that or I'll get totally distracted.
