Happenings

Our Gallery will open again. I had a question over the weekend on how to use the Gallery and if images could be uploaded to it. Thank you @MrRick for the prompting and getting my focus back on this very important feature of our community.

 

The gallery was closed to get a handle on images being uploaded without any information attached. Users would upload images and just leave it at that, no formal title, no description of what was going on in the image, nothing. I don't like that to be honest.

 

The gallery will be opened once again, there will be however a use agreement for participants using our gallery that a title needs to be applied to each image, a clear description of what the image is about, and any additional information.

If images are uploaded into our Gallery without a title, a description, the images will be deleted.

Thanks for your patience and I'll work on getting this set up and running once again.

This rocker PDF was requested by a visitor, they tried to download it and the file was empty, so I re-scanned and uploaded a new version of the file, I don't know how the file became corrupt, but it's fixed now!

This weekend I started exploring and practicing different Greene and Greene  techniques. The details of which are found on furniture, boxes, frames, etc. Here... I pillowed the box finger joints and temporarily placed a pillowed plug to see how it would look. The journey continues.

Love the journey Rick! And I have always admired the Greene and Greene, I've oogled images of their architectural style and furnishings for hours, someday I'd love to tour one of their homes, great work Rick, please keep us up to date on how ya coming along!

I did this just before dinner last night. I've done two corners of a cedar and pine box. These are actually inlaid with a square hole punch from Lee Valley.

You know my first thought when I see this style, is how wonderful, I wouldn't have to plane joints flat, could be a more efficient joint to execute, but then, it may be more labor intensive to create the poofy box joints sitting proud from the surface? What's your experience thus far say Rick?

In trying to keep it succinct the process is a bit taxing. If you're not into it for the beauty of the journey but rather the results it will be tedious. Joy must be first. Cutting the fingers can be a challenge to get tight but the difficulty comes in the "pillowing". It's awkward for the inside fingers. Next is the plugs. You better have very very sharp punches. With cedar and pine there's a tendancy for the wood fiber to tear and edge crumble before shearing. I'm still in the process of "dos and don'ts" but love the possibilities!

Hey Al, how is your hands dexterity these days? Can you still use tools? A knife for example, carving to be specific?

You're in the right area to visit most that are open for it.  Better do it before you retire and move away!  The only one I've been to is the Gamble house when we were visiting the ex-inlaws in Pasadena.

 

I've built a lot of G&G style furniture, the shop I worked for in Tucson did a lot of it.  It's fun stuff.  We often used old hollow chisels from the mortiser for punches, either for places the mortiser didn't reach or to clean up ones done with a mortiser and needing to be a little deeper or something.

I did a little woodworking over the weekend, making a dent in half done stuff that's been on my bench for a while.

Also finished the fuel filter change on my Jeep, had to cheat and watch a video to get it right (diesel, somewhat more complicated change than I'm used to).

Last night I was doing some leather work.  I need a new belt!

Not sure which was more productive......the Yard Sale Raids....or...a wee bit of wood working...

1st coat of varnish is now on..

 

Let this dry overnight, and see how it turns out

 

During all the raids...came across a Francken Drill....

That I had to swap out the jawless chuck for one that did indeed work...

May post a ton of photos ( IF the site allows it) down in the hand tool section..

However,,,not everything was without a cord..

Was $10 too much?   had 15 bits, a dust shield, a wrench and..

He wanted $25..I offered $10....

 Sorry @Gunnyand @John Morris. Just having a bad day. Got a covid shot and a flu shot a couple of days ago. The following morning, I didn't even have the strength to get out of bed. Never had this problem before but it really hit me this time. Couldn't even sit up in bed until later the next day. Still feeling kind of blah. Today I had all kinds computer problems and then problems that were eventually solved with the VA.. MY patience is really lacking these days. Never had much luck with carving John.

Packing for move to new house. Spent part of morning hauling to Goodwill and dump. Afternoon was packing  and taking apart the extension on computer desk. Did not know I built it that solid.
