Looking great 4D. I like the idea of adding vertical dowels between the rear stretchers.

That was my original plan, but the shelf rests over the front and back dowels with a 1/4 cove.  Fastened by a center pin on both ends.  Grain runs front to back and the center pin is to allow it to expand and contract but stay centered on the dowels.  Haven't figured out how to deal with 4 dowels intersecting it yet letting it expand/contract. Might use 3 with one in the center that registers the shelf end, and two with the shelf having gaps for them so it has room to move around them.

I like the fit of this connection well enough that I just ordered $120 worth of assorted cherry dowels. 1.5"d, 5/8"d, and 3/8"d.   I have some cherry boards on hand for a table top and lower shelf, so

It would be a lot more work and calculating but rather than make "sock" extensions, what about incorporating the contrasting wood leg extension in the middle (or somewhere along the length) of the leg

Drawer slides.  HDPE slips into dovetailed slots in the cherry rails.   Drawer sides will have a cove that rides on the HPDE.

Cherry rails are trapped between the legs with a notch that slips over a bump in the tapered slot.

Felt like it was time to make the drawer.

Fit good.  Slips in and out easily.  Red Zebra wood sides, and cherry front.  Cheap plywood bottom I'll likely cover with green adhesive backed felt.

Extends 75% before feeling loose.  I may add a stop once I add the top.  I used a tapered row of tenons in the corner joints. Helps align the joint vertically better than a normal tongue and groove corner. So far no glue has been used other than to glue on the zebra caps of the cherry legs. The tapered joints wedge tight, although my experience tells me humidity changes make them susceptible to seasonal loosening.

Top and shelf left to come.  I have a couple cherry panels I can use but they were intended for another project. Contemplating on how best to mount the top.

Added a 1/4" thick slice of cherry to the front, and cut a contour surface on it to make it more interesting. Related subliminally to the notch cut in the 5/8" dowel stretcher ends.  Drawer handle will register into the notch.

Back edge was cut to fit into the slot using a section of the same vector that cut the drawer face. May yet put a small chamfer around the edges.

Added a small chamfer around the end of the handle. Makes it look more like a part than a simple section of an extruded shape.  At least a little.  ;)Chamferedhandleedges2.thumb.jpg.7a18e7e0c9e43feead10d6b16b80f7f9.jpg

Perfect fit and smooth look 4D. I like it especially with the cove across the drawer.
