Last minute Christmas shopping here, does anyone have any experience with Wood Burning, Pyrography?

Any suggestions on a quality wood burning kit for a beginner are greatly appreciated. There are a ton of options out there, from 101 piece kits for 29.99 to the sky is the limit. Are the multi piece kits ok? Or should we stay with the basics? What are the basics?

Thanks folks

Once I got away from the Amazon stuff and found a dedicated site it looked like more quality in these tools, such as this link:

WOODBURNINGKIT.COM

Our Wood burning kit is made to perfection. Professional Wood Burning Kit 82 PC Pyrography Kit, with Adjustable Switch Control Temperature...

No help here John. Lew already provided the suggestions I thought of.

IIRC, @DRAGON1 Mike has experience in this craft too.

John, I use an Optima which is a very nice machine in the $200.00 range. With that, the most amazing pyrographer that I know of is Minisa Robinson and she tends to use a very affordable Walnut Hollow pen, which I think is available on Amazon or even Walmart. Minisa also has several video tutorials and/or books that I would recommend.

+1 on the Walnut Hollow set. I got a multi-piece set at Hobby Lobby for $30 +/-. Was able to do this on some leather I had. I did build the frame from red oak so it is 'technically' wood working related.:P

Second attempt at a picture burning. I started with a design from Lora Irish. She's noted for creating really nice pyrography patterns.

These are pics of my first stab at this. 2 hours in and then finished at 5 hours.

A little late, but I'll second the Walnut Hollow suggestion. I use it to sign such things as cutting boards, and it works very well, even on hardwoods.

@John Morrisvery late here . I have a Burnmaster which is good for high heat. Got a Razortip from Treeline a couple years ago and that is my main burner. I got a real good deal on a double burner but they have singles from $159.
