Popular Post steven newman Posted November 13, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted November 13, 2024 That stash of leftovers...that was resaw down to 1/2" thickness (more or less ~) Went through the mess, picked out a few pieces, and made a few panel glue-ups.. While trying to match up the grain a bit better.. These will be the end panels...so.. 2 ends, and the lid...I also glued up another panel for the "back" of the box..edges needed a bit of jointing, before the glue and clamps..so.. Stanley No. 4-1/2c and Stanley No. 6c were put to work... Let the panels sit overnight.. Stay tuned... lew, HARO50, Handfoolery and 6 others 9 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted November 14, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted November 14, 2024 Yesterday's work-out involved.... End panels...ripped to 6" width, ends cut square and matched both ends for length...Glue joints cleaned up, panels are now flat.. Same for the "Back Panel" Used an End panel to double check for flat.. At both ends.. A panel for the lid was also cleaned up... Thinking about Bread Board ends, too.... Thumb is a bit worse for wear... ( 3 tries to post this photo? Error code 200?) There is to be a strip across the front of the case....above where the drawer will be...and it also needed a bit of plane work.. Then a dry fit...no joinery, yet... Bu Busy day? Maybe....Still have a stash of wood the build a drawer with.. Stay tuned... Artie, Gerald, Grandpadave52 and 6 others 9 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted November 17, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted November 17, 2024 Hmmm, I might have to up-date this...as I currently doing dry fits... And the back.. Popular Post steven newman Posted November 18, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted November 18, 2024 Had 2 tasks to get done, today....( Monday? ) Task #1: knock the dry fit apart....spread a bit of glue around, and.. Do a Glue-up..and hope things come together nice and square.. 9 clamps, a couple cauls, and a brush to spread the glue around, and NOT have the glue running out everywhere... And..while this is sitting on the bench, taking up space... I thought I could do a bit of work on making slips....already had a few blanks sawn....but, they looked clunky at 1/2" x 1/2" square..so.. Task #2: Set up the tablesaw to resaw the blanks down to 1/4" thick.. Wide stick is a Push Stick, notched to hold thin parts...as my FAT fingers will not fit between the fence and that spinning blade... Should be enough? From here on, this will get used.. Cut to lengths needed, and miter a few corners... Task #3 will be later,,,involves this blank.. This is a blank for the front of drawers...yes, 2 drawers Intend to saw this right down the center..to make the upper and lower drawer fronts..plus, there needs to be a divider between them.. To cover the ends of the drawer runners..Bottom drawer will just slide across the Base... Stay tuned Gerald, Artie, Grandpadave52 and 4 others 7 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted November 19, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted November 19, 2024 Lock the Mitersaw to 45 degrees.. Add a scrap to help with a clean cut...cut the 2 long slips.. With a miter cut at each end. Front Slip needs to be glued even with the bottom edge of the front piece...Then run a combo square set to the top of that first slip...and saw and glue and clamp...staring with the back slip... Double checking with the combo square....corners should look like this... Let this sit a spell...might start up on building a pair of Drawers, next? We'll see....will also have to cut a plywood floor to sit down onto these slips... Stay tuned... Grandpadave52, HARO50, Gerald and 2 others 5 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted November 21, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted November 21, 2024 3 Tasks for today...Besides the Normal Pay Day Errands.... 1: cut a 1/4" plywood panel.. To act as a floor...bed it down into a bead of glue, with a wee bit of weight.. Task #2: mill the drawer fronts to size... Along with the divider. Task #3...took a little bit longer...there WAS a 1 x 8 that appears to be Ash Sapwood....and at one time was a Bug Hotel....cross cut and ripped to remove the worst of the Bug Tunnels...which left me.. These 5 planks...jointed the edges a bit...and.. Part of the Process, was to resaw the worst face off, and wind up with a panel 5/8" thick....Will let this sit a day or 2...need to start making parts for 2 drawers... Stay tuned.. lew, Harry Brink, HARO50 and 3 others 5 1 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted November 22, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted November 22, 2024 (edited) Alrighty...base panel came out of the clamps this morning....and needed a good flattening.. And the ends squared up...Then to keep it flat, I clamped it to the case... Later, after the drawers are done, I'll glue in place...was trying to see IF I can get it centered up...and check on how well the drawer fronts and divider will fit... Hmmm, not quite...a wee bit too FAT...(tall)...we have ways.. Peel the same amount of both at the same time...until the fronts and the divider are a decently loose fit...no binding allowed... Need to mill drawer sides (4) and drawer backs(2)....both for length.. And for width...as I need to allow for the 1/4" plywood bottom...Drawer fronts get a rebate.. To house the edge of the plywood bottom panel from view...Then a start of dovetails...again...Pins first, of course.. And then tails will get milled.. About the wood in that base? I went through an entire 1x 8 x 6' plank to get the few sections I could use...the rest of that plank? "Bugtussle Hotel" When the fire pit dries out enough,, these will be going there... Drawer building will start tomorrow, I hope... Stay tuned... Edited November 22, 2024 by steven newman Grandpadave52, DuckSoup, HARO50 and 4 others 7 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted November 22, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted November 22, 2024 Ok, at the 2 hour mark..toes were crampy, bench had a glue up blocking any more work, anyway...so.. Shop does have a NEW Combo Square, BTW... Brand name? "Johnson"...seems to check out square, so far... Drawer Building, today....got about halfway done... Dry fit #1...front corner...and.. Dry fit #2..repeat for the back 2 corners....then glue, and clamps.. Checked for square...clamps were also to install the drawer's bottom panel... Bottom just gets glued in place...no metal pieces involved....other than the clamps...Let this drawer dry for a while... Stay tuned... Grandpadave52, Harry Brink, lew and 3 others 6 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted November 24, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted November 24, 2024 Drawer is now sitting in the case.. . Have since installed a single, small knob to the front.. Laid out pins first...second drawer was worked on, today.. Work Station...while the pins were sawn by hand and chopped out with a chisel..... Tails were done on the Bandsaw...dry fit? Got both front corners done, and.. And was getting ready to do the back 2 corners...then Football happened... Try again, tomorrow, eh? Stay tuned.. lew, Fred W. Popular Post steven newman Posted November 24, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted November 24, 2024 Calm before the storm? A wee bit of cussing..some glue, a brush to moosh it around...and a small forest of clamps.. Had to re-size a wood dowel... As these knobs came without a tenon...drill a hole in drawer #1..and. Waiting on glue to cure, before I add a knob to Drawer #2... Drawer runners need to be laid out.. And then glued in place... And..double check to make sure the drawer will still slide in.... Then lay out for the front divider.. Hides the ends of the runners, and closes the gap between the 2 drawers... Just went back to the shop...as the divider looked a bit plain & fragile... So..I cut a second divider to fit inside the box, and made the outside one into a gentle curve...so..now those 2 are sitting in a few clamps... Stay tuned.. lew, Grandpadave52, HARO50 and 3 others 6 Quote
