August 12, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Ok..since I was already in the shop, this morning...decided to try a wee bit of wood working...despite it being a Monday. Work station ready? Intend to work, sitting down on the job? Could be.. Doing Pins first, as usual...then the chisels went to work.. Rotate this over, line up inside face to inside face... Very sharp #2 Pencil to trace around each pin... Saw the lines on the waste side. Be sure to knife the baselines...and then use the chisels to chop out the waste.... Dry Fit...when you NEED a mallet to drive things into place... Should be tight enough...and.. It even sits square! One corner is done... 3 more to go...then a rebate around in back..to house a 1/4' plywood back panel...then work on the inside stuff... Stay tuned...

August 14, 20241 yr Author Have no idea where that knife came from, nor how long ago... Corner #2 is done.. Was almost too tight...those are not gaps...those be shadow lines.... Corner #3 was a little bit better behaved.. However...there was a question with corner #4.. "Will it fit?" Hmmm.. Eh...it's a possibility..... With all 4 corners now dovetailed...it was time to set up this plane, again.. Craftsman No. 3720( Sargent No. 79)...need to set the depth stop to 1/4" deep...and get the fence set up to cut a 5/8" wide rebate... But, hold to hold the parts long enough...one end in the Leg Vise...this end? We have ways..As long as the fence ( and my knuckles) will clear both the jaws on the leg vise, AND this metal clamp...should be good enough... 1st attempt at a pass...was set way to deep..backed it off too much....a few "taps" from a hammer... Kind of distracting..when them LONG shavings curl up around the wrist, ain't it? 1 Rebate is done, only 3 more to do.. Stay tuned...
August 15, 20241 yr Author Since all 4 rebates were done.. And that pile of Krunchies had been swept up.. Yep, about half of a 5 gal. bucket's worth.... Decided to ATTEMPT a glue -up..... Almost got things out of order...corrected that ( Cussing was involved ) Those LONG clamps, made things a bit crowded in the shop..and trying to flip this over was even worse... Diagonal clamp, because this was about 1/8" out of square..I even caused one of the 3/4" pipes to bend! Letting this sit a spell....we'll see how things look, later.. Stay tuned..
August 18, 20241 yr Author Plywood back has been cut to size, and notched...then before it could be installed.. needed to install a "Hanger Rail" that has to be flush with the bottom of the rebates...this will be how the case will be attached to the wall...wanted something besides just the plywood....when the glue.. and 2 screws were done...I could install the back panel with glue and screws.. And, notched? Well... There was this gap thing going on where the rebates met...filled in the gap by notching the ends of the plywood panel..leaving just a "Tab" to fill in the gap. Then I could layout 3 parts... To make the Towel Rack frame...these will be joined with glue and screws....but, first...I need 6 holes drilled.. To house 3 rods...like the "New" Cordless Drill?....these are the rods from the existing cabinet...had to be shorten by about 2", more or less...and, trying to get them to match each other...clamps? Well, the wood parts needed glue and screws, and they needed to be clamped in place until the glue sets up.. Stay tuned...trying to decide which to do next...hand and fit 2 doors? Install the Towel Rack? Cut and install the Top Shelf? Finish is to match.. This...NOT.. NOT this...this will be heading to the curb later...as soon as I get the mounting holes spacings...and transfer those to the new mounting rail... Stay tuned..
August 19, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Busy weekend, actually...and...case now has a top shelf... Cut for length, ripped for width ( and get rid of some NASTY Knots)....glued and screwed flush with the back of the case (which will be against the wall) Sanded all the rough areas, milled a cove ( except along the back...see above) Doors were getting fitted... These will need a small lip along the bottom edge...otherwise, I will need to install small knobs to open the doors with... So..maybe next time I am in the shop...I can install a few of these.. I think that will do it, for now...
August 21, 20241 yr Author Popular Post So...spent 90 minutes IN the shop, today...then the toes went Cramp-city... Got one door cleaned up, and Squared up...put a 1/4" x 1/4" "shim" underneath the Top shelf, and slid the door up against the shim.. Marked out where the 2 hinges are to be, and marked a line down over the door and the case...sized to the hinge being used... Set door aside for a bit, get out a few good tools.. And clamped the case to the top of the bench...as I did not want it hopping around...yes, I will be using that Aldi's chisel, yes I will be hitting it with that hammer..Knife and Combo square to "knife " the layout lines.. Same chisel to pare away any high spots..repeat for the other hinge's mortise...yes, I did check the hinge to the mortise.. Making sure it isn't too deep, and is not rocking.... Set the case aside..lay the door on the bench and clamp it, Jed...same routine..place chisel, 3 whacks, move chisel a bit, repeat ....finally got both hinge mortises done...I even hauled the door over to the case to confirm the mortises matched each other exactly.. Time to install some hinges...needed pilot holes to help locate where the screws will go..so Yes, I used to have a VIX bit...but, this is a bit faster...and it is self centering..I hold the hinge's leaf in place, set the bit into a hole, drive the pin in as far as it will go.. Pilot holes are done. repeat for the case.. Clear a spot on the bench for both the case and the door..and dig out that old candle..wax a few threads...drive a few screws with the ..Cordless Drill/Driver and... Ready to close this door up, and see how it works... Worked quite well...it would have slammed IF I didn't hold on...yes, there is a gap at the top of the door 1/4" one, in fact..there is also a "lip" at the bottom of the door.. The gap at the top means the door will never rub against the underside of the top shelf...the lip at the bottom is for you fingers to open the door with.. About here, the toes went into Cramp mode...which just about ended the day in the shop...next time I head down there? I get to do it all over again for Door #2.. Stay tuned..
August 22, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Ok..Towel Rack is installed.. May need a shim? Close this back up...open the vise up as a 3rd hand...and install the case upside down.. Because it was easier to install these 2 items.. All centered up? Then comes the fun part... Basically, you place the plate on the magnet..close the door...holding the plate in place, I opened the door, marked where to pilot hole for the screw ( screw for the plates are a POS, BTW) Then attach the plate to the door..and see if it works.. And should hear a "Click"...repeat for the other door. Hardware is now all installed, other than drill for the 2 hanger lag bolts...Next? Stay tuned...
August 23, 20241 yr Can't wait to see that beauty hanging on the wall! Bet the "Boss" will be thrilled!!!
August 24, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Chain has been installed.. One on each end of the Towel rack.....insides have been varnished...except for the plywood back panel.... let this sit just like this overnight...then, after all the running around, today...came back and closed the doors (had one magnet stuck, had to free it up for the door to stay latched...) and... varnished the outsides...letting this sit overnight..Sunday will see about switching things out..need two holes drilled for the lag bolts... Stay tuned...
August 25, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Well..this morning..I needed to haul the old cabinet to the shop..lay it on the new cabinet...use the mounting holes as "Drill Guides"...to drill the mounting holes in the new cabinet...which left this mess behind.. Which meant I needed to scrub the wall a bit.... took 2 people to lift and install the new cabinet into place..but.. Hung up..doors opened up....and... With the Towel Rack lowered...I did take a photo of this with the doors closed up...hand-held camera/phone..came out very fuzzy... I suppose I could try again for a better photo later? Otherwise, this Project is Completed...thanks for looking in!
August 25, 20241 yr Author Popular Post So..went back into the Bathroom..armed with an Impact drill, and a small level....loosened one lag screw, and then raised that corner up, until the bubble was centered up...and then drove the screw back into... When we open the bedroom door... This stops the door knob from hitting the plaster wall... The "Before"? And..now the "After".. Seems to fit right in.... Thanks for looking in!
