August 4, 20241 yr Popular Post This thing hanging on the Bathroom wall.. Wall E World's finest....someone used a cove bit and made fake raised panels...because on the inside.. Just plain white "board"...I might recycle the hardware,,,the rest will just have to go to the Fire Pit...bacause ( besides being very UGLY) .... Does NOT match up with this cabinet over the sink...nor... The one over the Throne...so... The Plan...is to cut a few sticks of Ash up and build a "copy" in Ash...with real raised panel doors...to match .. These 2 doors...right down to the bead details.. And the joinery.. Moose & Squirrel Express has dropped off a "Plan" With a bit of a cut list... Will be dragging this tool out.. And try to get 2 panels ready for a glue up...to make the Raised panels for the doors.. Hopefully get this done and on the wall by Labor Day Weekend..I hope... Stay tuned..
August 5, 20241 yr Popular Post Following along. Do your best to get it done by Labor Day weekend please. I plan to take that weekend off.
August 5, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Day #1... Cross cut about 2 planks..needed 6 blanks to build two raised panels.. One plank was a bit thicker than the over...so...then.. Level up after the saws..the rip saw "popped" off a piece.. Laying there in the shavings...so..the matching piece was simply run through the bandsaw, instead.. Somehow, they both wound up thinner than the center blank...but, since it was also still rough sawn.. I smoothed both faces down, and got as close to the other 2 as I could...enough that.. I needed one smooth face, which is why the single cauls...A friend of mine has a 12" Lunch Box Planer...so once BOTH panels are out of the clamps, I might haul them over and run them through...any snipe will be taken out when I raised the panels....panels are 13" x 13"....I need 11" x 11" raised Panels... 2nd panel? Arranged for best grain match..seems it will need a jointer? We have ways.. Stanley called the No. 6 a Small Jointer...took a while until.. Spread some glue. vise is both a 3rd hand and a caul...letting this sit a day or 2.. Meanwhile, I need to start milling up 2 frames to house these panels..and then see about building a box to hang the doors onto... Stay tuned....
August 6, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Both panels are out of the clamps, and trimmed down to 11-1/4" width... problem I am having with the stock.. All rough sawn, and @ 15/16" thick..and some even thicker! need to get them all down the about 3/4" thick, maybe a shade under... 8 Blanks for the frames were milled up. Cut to just over 14" in length, some a bit longer...width is 2"....Thickness was buzzed down to ~3/4" thick..clamped together to get them all used to their new size. Road Trip Today: Boss has her errands, and while she is doing that, I drive over to my friend's barn...as he still has not only my old Lunch Box planer, but his copy of it...intend to run the parts through a few times...much easier to work with parts that are a consistent thickness...may even buy a couple new planks, while I am there...and run them through as well...we'll see... Need to set up some things... As I need to mill 16 beads...with the Stanley #45...then..work on the joinery stuff.. To include the grooves to house the Raised panels in. Stay tuned
August 6, 20241 yr Popular Post And all on one day. Makes me feel glad I am not starting a project for cabinets.
August 6, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Road Trip, today...Friend that I buy lumber from...also has a Lunch Box Planer...thought I'd take the panels and the rest to his barn..run them through a few times..... Hmmmm.... Panels wound up badly sniped...but in the areas that did not matter... Will replace about half of them..as the do not match the others..so.. For $10, and the use of his Mitersaw...the one with the "X" is still a tad too thick...and is NOT Ash...save it for the next Project..the 2 wider planks USED to be one plank, that we had to cut in half..at 5' per....and a re 3/4" x 10s....the others were cut down from 2 planks...a 10'er and an 8'er... Between getting chased down a city street by TWO EMS Squads...almost getting hit by 4 other Darwin Award Winners...yep..one of THEM days....right foot was getting tired of the gas pedal, and decided to cramp up. 89 bright & sunny degrees outside... Stay tuned...
August 6, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Decided to just make new frame parts...hauled the 2 pieces that USED to be 8' long to the shop...cut 4 blanks at 15" long.....then ripped those down to 2" widths, to get the 8 blanks I needed.... Next. set up to mill a groove on... one edge..4 passes on the tablesaw. Made a mess, too..( not the first of the day, either..) Wait a minute, I said 8 parts, right? So where is #8 at? Sitting over on the bench...in a simple jig..and getting a couple beads done.. One on each edge......Stanley #45 with a .. No. 23 cutter...makes a nice mess on the floor, too... Kind of stringy, too..one or two passes, stop, pull the strings out, and back to work...more than 3..it jambs up.. Managed to get 2 done, before the cramps started up..even with the Fan set on HIGH... 2 done, only 6 more to do...pencil marks? were to help layout the fence for the grooves.. I did set up #3 in the jig...both..stopped there, for today.. Stay tuned
August 8, 20241 yr Author Popular Post 16 beads are now done did... Put the jig away..need to figure out how to connect these in to frames for 2 doors...to where the outside looks like a Miter Joint.. But..when you look at the inside of the frame's corner.... They will look like this...have a couple things to correct...and still have 7 more corners to make... Stay tuned..
August 8, 20241 yr Author Popular Post About an hour in the shop, today...one frame dry fitted... Working on frame #2.. And found out about the fresh DNA... Chisel got me twice, never felt either of them..I guess it is sharp enough.. And...finally...soaked clear through (even with the fan set on HIGH!) kind of sore... Both frames have now been dry fitted up..been measured for the raised Panels...10" x 10-1/2"....need to work on trimming and raising 2 panels...tomorrow.. Stay tuned..

August 9, 20241 yr Author Popular Post A Pos. Trimmed the 2 panels to size...second one was having "issues"...and decided to try and fly away....however... This was under my shirt, when it got stopped..Ouch.. None the less, both panels were trimmed to size, the "good face was given 4 bevels.. And a rebate was run on the inside... Will need that Sargent No. 79..as the rebates were to fat...dry fitted one panel... Needs the burn marks sanded off.. two shop times..each about 1 hour long... Was a very busy day... Stay tuned..

August 9, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Burn marks...=...operator error...stopped in middle of the cut to change the grip... Work holding set up.. As all those Rebates are not deep enough....rather FAT ...so.. Yes...that plane will work just like that..depending on the grain directions Test fit? 3 or 4 times, until.. Fits all the way into the groove...had all 4 rebates to do...and plenty of dry fits...until.. Glue & Clamps showed up...this is a view of the Inside of the Door... And..this is the outside of the door...due to the clamps, this is sitting on it's side...will "rotate" 90 degrees once the clamps come off... Yard mowed, hedge trimmers run, Laundry Detail...and this...I think I be working way too hard...for a Friday..? Stay tuned..
August 11, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Doors are out of the clamps. . And awaiting filling and clean up.. tablesaw has just been run... The 4 sides of the box have been ripped to width, and crosscut to length... All depends on the Boss' Schedule for the rest of today... Stay tuned..
August 11, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Needed 4 boards.. 2 longs and 2 shorts...to build the cabinet's "Box"...long ones were from one board..but I needed a second board for the short ones.. While the 2 long ones were close to the correct thickness.. The 2 shorties were not.. Edges were in need of a good jointing, too.. We have ways...Boards were clamped up and sat for a while...hoping to pull one curved board into flat...but, since I already had 1/4" extra to work with... A "Before & After" Edges were also jointed..all of them.. Notice the floor? Yep, was that kind of a day...for about 1 hour... Even the 2 long boards were worked on.. Plane was made during WW2, BTW..a Stanley No. 6c... was able to get all 4 boards done, without too much of a mess.. Got a few toys out.. And started a wee bit of layout work.. To be ready for the next time in the shop... Stay tuned
