July 29, 20241 yr Popular Post nothing planned for the shop this week, our church is hosting a "art show" this coming sunday evening, i signed up to show off some of the stuff i've made in my shop over time. recipe box, cutting board, candle sticks, bowl, spoon set/box, and perhaps one of the communion tables i recently made for the church.
July 29, 20241 yr Went to the furniture bank this morning. We had a few outside volunteers and most of us regulars spent time prepping parts and cutting parts. I got to repair a couple of pieces. One I had to blind stitch the outside back of an easy chair. And it was missing an odd assortment of decorative nails. So I had my upholstery kit with me. Another was a small end table that had the crappiest quality I think I've ever seen. The base was held together with KD fasteners -- the type with a stud and a connector that's rotated to hold it in position. One of the 4" long legs was loose. The stud had fractured. I tried to remove the connector and it crumbled apart. As did a couple of others. I ended up just trying to do a pocket hole screw into the 1/2" thick vinyl covered particle board. It literally just crumbled apart. Who makes this stuff?

July 30, 20241 yr Popular Post @lew - Beautiful rolling pin Lew, hope everyone there appreciated and understood all the work that went into prepping the blanks! My weekend was pretty busy and went by too fast. Saturday the client for the window sash project came and we went over his ideas for the project. He had already given me some direction and ideas so I had several of the drawings already made, just a simple matter of resizing and positioning as we talked it over. He left mid afternoon and by that evening I already had the plans drawn to scale and placed in proposed locations. A couple parties up the street that evening, one we were invited to, one I "invited" myself to . So, a great taco on one side of the street to welcome new neighbors and enjoyed a low country boil with neighbors on the other side... Sunday I printed out the sash plans to scale and colored them in to show the client. Sunday evening we had company over for supper; a young couple soon to be married. She is a school teacher, and school starts back today for her; he does some type of medical pre-approval authorization work from home. I have a wedding mirror underway for them and wanted to find out the stain/dye they might like on the frame. Yesterday I met the sash client for breakfast and showed him the six panels drawn out. He suggested/requested a few changes. No problem, that's why we work in pen & ink & colored pencils first. Then Julie & I drove over to West Point, GA to obtain a U.S. National Parks pass. Plan to see Yosemite in a couple of months Speaking of which, most all of our train & hotel reservations are made. We only lack the last two segments, from Chicago back to Atlanta. We haven't yet decided which path we'll take... Julie has been working towards getting the various transit passes for all of the cities we'll be doing a stop in. That ranges from the cheap and easily understood - Albuquerque is free, New Orleans is $ .80 for a one day pass to ride anything to the worst, complex & expensive like San Francisco. SF seems to have 6 or 7 different transit outfits going in different directions and only sometimes use common terminals and different passes are required on each... And, I've made it part of my morning routine to get in two hours of walking each morning before it gets too hot. That's generally one hour on the walking machine and one hour at the county park next door. I usually get about 10-12,000 steps from that exercise which is 4-5 miles. I want to do at least a short hike in Yosemite, and I want to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. Looking ahead for the week, I'll be working on a window sash and wedding mirror projects along with the usual outside yard stuff.

They do make some MDF stuff, but a lot of their furniture pieces are solid wood - not hardwoods but solid wood nonetheless. In my experience with the solid wood stuff, if care is taken in the initial setup the stuff is pretty fair quality and will take a lot of abuse in the form of disassembly, moving and setting back up - perfect for college students and young mobile types. From this day forward, I will try not to bash IKEA... Go IKEA!

July 30, 20241 yr Popular Post Well, I did get some shop time in earlier but it got too uncomfortable even with the window air unit running. It's not capable of keeping up with the heat from the machines. So I retire to house to try something different (for us). We're not party people do we don't so a lot of snacks like wings and whatever else is prepared for events like the (shudder, cough, coke) super bowl. But...I did have some Jalapenos left over from something else i fixed so i tried Jalapeno Poppers for the first time. After digging around for a recipe i found one that looked achievable with my non-existent culinary skills, and they turned out great. I'm not sure if I'll do this again, it will take Marie and I several days to eat these; but they are good!

BTW, those look really good.

July 31, 20241 yr Ugh, a tough day yesterday. The power went out about 1:45 AM. This was during or about 2" of rain. The sump pump backup unit was running almost continuously. Got out the portable generator and hooked it up to the sump. Out in my PJs and got wet. Initial estimates were restored power by 11 am. 11 am came and passed and still nothing. There was a large tree across the road around the corner. We went out for a coffee and the next road over also had a tree down closing traffic. Took the back way down and up the valley and there was a semi at the bottom of the hill. Despite at least 3 signs that thru trucks are restricted, there he was and unable to make the last turn. Probably headed for a U-turn and a 20 mile detour to get back where he was headed. On the way home, took a different route and there was a tree down on our road, but it had been chopped off the road. Still no estimated repair time. Then a neighbor caught one of the dozen or so bucket trucks around here (none of which were actually doing any work) and they estimate 9 pm. 9pm came and gone and about 10:15 the power came back on. After waiting a while to make sure it stayed on, shut down the generator and put the sump and the freezer back online. And somewhere, yet to be determined, there was a 6' wide puddle of water in the middle of the basement floor, got it sucked up today and running the dehumidifier. Edited July 31, 20241 yr by kmealy
July 31, 20241 yr Popular Post Moved the dehumidifier to another part of the basement where the puddle was. Checked later and the display said E9. So I dug out the owner's manual and there were several E error codes, but not E9. So checked again and it was 09. That was not listed either. Rotated it around and it read 60 (percent humidity) and the prior one must have been 63% DUH!!
July 31, 20241 yr That storm spawned at one tornado as it turns over in Clinton county (near Blanchester). But there was some severe damage in the area even without the tornado.
