July 19, 20241 yr Popular Post Hi Everyone So-I decided to change coarse a little and start a new project. I have 4 grandkids and the oldest one just had his 10th birthday. I asked what he might like for "Gramps" to make him and he said he really liked " Pandas". We found a piece of free clip-art he liked so I drew up the pattern and created the subject for my next Intarsia project. 23 pieces from Peruvian Walnut , Holly, Ebony, Brownheart and Lignum Vitae. Stay tuned- this will be fun!!
July 20, 20241 yr That will be a treasure for him! Will this be something that will be mounted in a picture frame?

Yeah that was a challenge but I think I nailed it To Cal- At this point in the project all I know is it will be a framed scene. I like framed intarsia mostly because it allows me to use thinner pieces to create the 3D effects using many different woods and grains to give it the perception of depth.
July 24, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Hi Everyone So- I started working on the scene for my little Panda Intarsia. I decided to go with an 8" circular frame which should be challenging to get the depth right but pretty sure I can make it look very 3 dimensional ..The stairway added 12 pieces from sycamore. Stay tuned-this will be a fun one.

July 25, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Hi All Got the pagoda drawn ,cut, rough shaped and glued together. 12 pieces from Bloodwood, cocobolo and persimmon. Starting to add the flowers (tulipwood) into the foreground. Stay tuned-more to come!!

July 27, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Hi Everyone Started working on the foreground of my Intarsia to get a better feel for what is needed to get depth in such a small scene. I chose butternut for the foreground as it had the color and grain I was looking for. I also decided I didn't like the Tulipwood flowers so changed them to Redheart. Up to 55 pieces from 12 woods. Are we having fun yet?
July 27, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Thanks Bob Wood choice is probably the most time consuming part of the process. Lots of trial and error involved to get it to look right. I design these projects as I go so if a piece doesn't look right it's easy enough to try again.
