Popular Post steven newman Posted February 15, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted February 15, 2024 Remember these? That have since been resawn down a bit.. Faces flattened.. Marking gauge, the "New & Improved" one..to lay out for dovetails... Then a little bit of layout work.. Yep, I do "Pins First" then a wee bit of a saw... Chisels and such to chop out the waste, mark the tails by using these pins to trace around...saw and chop.. First dry fit... So, in 90 minutes of shop time today...rinse and repeat, until.. the other 3 corners are done... So, what will be going into this case? these 2 Stanley No. 77 Mortise gauges....yellow lines? I need to make a holder/rest for them long arms to sit on/in...will add 2 notches. Need to also cut a bottom panel..and work on the lid a bit After that? I might just see how fancy I can get? Stay tuned... Fred W. Hargis Jr, Harry Brink, HARO50 and 6 others 9 Quote

steven newman Posted February 18, 2024 Author Report Posted February 18, 2024 A glue up happened..First I needed a bracket made.. Might be a bit rough to install this afterwards.. Goal being to keep the long sides from bowing in when the clamps are done..let this sit overnight.. Then, today, these clamps came off, all 4 sides and the top and bottom of the box were planed and sanded clean, and square.. Next, a 1/4" plywood panel was cut to size, glue was spread around...making sure it was the bottom edge of the box.. There is a caul across the middle, because .. There was glue on the bottom of the bracket as well...will let this sit a while...then maybe work on a lid? Will add strips around on the underside of the lid...more wood for the hinges and latch to grab onto.. And maybe add these,, Might see about a label? Stay tuned... Popular Post steven newman Posted February 18, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted February 18, 2024 Box is out of the clamps. . Had 2 high spots to flatten down...edges were sanded and planed flush, then a slight bevel added. Then set the box onto the panel for the lid..marked around the box... Need to plane to the lines...so.. We have ways...The No. 3 was..OK, except for when it came back too far....front porch is a bit short...No. 5-1/2 had a better, longer front porch... Next up.. Used this to make... These sticks. Then set up this.. To miter the ends... Then some glue and clamps... Will let this sit a day...maybe? As for how well the two No. 77s fit in the box? Should keep them from rattling around.. Hardware tomorrow? Have to clean up the lid, and get it fitted to the box...no gaps allowed.. Stay tuned Harry Brink, Grandpadave52, Fred W. Popular Post steven newman Posted February 20, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted February 20, 2024 Lid has been fitted to the box...and hardware installed.. Need to go and buy a few brushes,,, Hinges? Top of the box? Open the lid?Fancy Tools need a Fancy Case, right? Question now is....Brand the Logo on the inside of the lid, or on top of the lid? Hmmmmm? Still learning HOW to use this phone camera....hardest part was keeping me fingers out of the way.. Work area? There IS a "ZOOOOM" button, somewhere? Stay tuned..might get a finish on this box later.. Harry Brink, Gerald, Grandpadave52 and 2 others 5 Quote

Cal Posted February 21, 2024 Report Posted February 21, 2024 That's a pretty fancy February box Steven! Brand it on the inside, and something on the outside to identify the contents... @Pauley recently posted up a completed project where he used a burn paste to create a really nice tray (I think it was). Popular Post steven newman Posted February 22, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted February 22, 2024 Hmmm, coat of stain dried a bit lighter than what I wanted... Maybe add a bit more? Line down the front face is a knot... Twins? Added some foam to the bottom...as for under the lid.. Branded.. Not sure I would call this a Branding "Iron" when it is solid Brass.. I guess THIS is the Branding Iron...takes 20 minutes to get to the right temp. And, about that long to cool down. This might be the next step...will see how it turns out... Doubt IF I will add a chain to the lid... Next! Once the varnish has dried... Stay tuned.. Grandpadave52, HARO50, Cal and 2 others 5 Quote
