steven newman Posted April 13, 2023 Report Posted April 13, 2023 (edited) Sorted the last of the Ash scraps...resaw most of it down.. Sorted out for 4 slabs at the same thickness....ripped those to the same width...as for squaring the ends... Mitre gauge set to 80 degrees? 2 long sides, and a pair of ends....10 degree bevel complicates things a bit, though.. Guess I can't use this square...have another to use.. Also to lay out through dovetails... Gave an old saw another try... Jackson Backsaw... then chop out the waste... Trace around these Pins, to lay out the tails...saw and chop...dry fit.. Then repeat for the next corner....until... All 4 are done. Stay tuned, more to come... Edited April 13, 2023 by steven newman fat fingers Cal, lew and Harry Brink 3 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted April 13, 2023 Author Popular Post Report Posted April 13, 2023 Decided this needed a handle of some sort...sorted through the pile again..found this..thing... One edge was a LITTLE better than the other..jointed that one.. Then laid the slab over, in the vise.. Same plane to level things up/down... Draw a shape on the blank..cut the blank to length with the angled ends, then bandsaw the shape...was a bit rough..we have ways... Spokeshave to smooth things down a bit.....needed to lay out the stopped dados to house this handle... Chisels to remove most of the waste....then plane to clean up... Then a dry fit, to make sure the handle is not too long... Those things sticking up? Are cauls...8 of them.. Without these, clamping during a glue up just ain't going to work.. Test fit half of the clamps, for now... Next episode? A glue up. and a clean up....glue up first.... Stay tuned Harry Brink, lew, Grandpadave52 and 2 others 5 Quote
steven newman Posted April 13, 2023 Author Report Posted April 13, 2023 Glue up..after a full day of other things to do... Plywood on top of the tablesaw...flat surface to work off of..all laid out, awaiting the bottle of glue and a brush to moosh it around with.. Let the fun begin! Bottom 4 clamps first, check for square...then add the upper level of clamps...check for square again..diagonal clamp to pull until it is square.. Let this sit overnight... Today? Remove the clamps and cauls.. Hmmm...toss , or keep? Fresh out of the clamps... Did not want to try to clean this mess up with a hand plane, so.. . We have ways...brand new belt, too... Bottom edge and top edge are now flt...working on filling any gaps... Slab under the tray will be the "bottom" and is 1/8" thick Ash....spread a bit of glue around.. Add 3 cauls across, for the clamps to hold onto...letting this sit until tomorrow,,,then trim the bottom down to size.. Stay tuned Harry Brink, Grandpadave52, lew and 1 other 4 Quote
Grandpadave52 Posted April 14, 2023 Report Posted April 14, 2023 Finally made it here. Thanks. Good thread. Easier to follow start to finish here. Might just inspire someone else too down the road. Cal, steven newman and lew 2 1 Quote
lew Posted April 14, 2023 Report Posted April 14, 2023 Love the angled sides. My first (and last) attempt at angled dovetails was a miserable failure. Grandpadave52, steven newman and Cal 3 Quote

Popular Post PeteM Posted April 14, 2023 Popular Post Report Posted April 14, 2023 You weren't serious about "toss or keep" were you? I thought it was part of the WWer Code: never discard that which can gather dust awaiting the promise of repetition. Grandpadave52, Cal, Gene Howe and 3 others 6 Quote

Right that small piece may be just what you need some day so you don't have to cut up a larger board Cal, lew, Grandpadave52 and 3 others 2 4 Quote
steven newman Posted April 14, 2023 Author Report Posted April 14, 2023 1st coat of Amber Shellac will be getting sanded down, this evening... Dealing with Blood Sugar spikes, at the moment....not fun... Sanded to 220, and wiped down... Bottom of the tray....tried to line up the grain a bit....got close? An end view...was a few runs...second coat will cure that.. Will let coat #2 sit a spell.... Then maybe a top coat of Poly? Stay tuned... Grandpadave52, lew and Cal 2 1 Quote
