February 8, 20233 yr Popular Post My wife wants me to make a dizzy bowl for my nephew's wedding present. So I figured I better make one to work out the details. For my test bowl I'm using white pine, purpleheart, redheart, yellowheart, osage orange, tiger wood, nocal, wenge, black walnut... I think that all. I noticed that using thick slabs the bowl ended up looking chunky... we'll see. The base is two layers of 12 segments of nocal, it's a little soft but looks nice. Hot gluing the next layer to the centering disk. Gluing up the second ring. Gluing up the strips. the cauls are hickory and the squiggly line is to remind me that is not a flat surface. JT
February 8, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Squared up and ready to resaw them into strips... got a new wood slicer blade on the bandsaw. It's a rainy cold Wednesday so a nap is in order first. JT
February 8, 20233 yr Popular Post This will be the first I saw made since the William Young--Woodworking Friends days. This was his specialty. Wonder if he is still around?
February 8, 20233 yr Popular Post Since I have no idea what a "dizzy bowl" is, I'll be following just to learn.

February 8, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Got them resawn and sanded flat and the circles marked but it's raining so hard I just had to dash for the house and wait for the chickens to go in their coops so I could lock them up. I'll post some photos tomorrow. JT

February 9, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Got the slabs sanded and the circles drawn out. Each half is taped together temporarily with blue painters tape. JT
February 9, 20233 yr Popular Post Wow. I vaguely remember those colors. It was 1967 at the Monterey Pop Festival ! Saw lots of those colors. But I digress. Looking to be a very cool bowl ! Paul
February 14, 20233 yr Not sure what a "dizzy bowl" is but the colors are looking great. I'll be following this one for sure!
February 14, 20233 yr Author Got the slabs cut and sanded to size and marked the rings a few times... Cut the ring halves out... not very well. I need to build a circle cutting jig for the band saw. JT
February 14, 20233 yr Author Gluing up the ring halves. The small ones were easy... I quickly figured out this method was not going to work because the ring ends didn't stay perfectly aligned... So I changed my method and used a weight and some bits of wood to hold the ends down flat. JT
February 14, 20233 yr Author Popular Post Started gluing up the rings and turning them round and somewhat roughing it in. Starting to develop the pattern.;. JT
February 14, 20233 yr Looking good. Way to improvise when things don't work out the way you think they should. There is always a way.
February 14, 20233 yr Author Popular Post When gluing the rings on I match the pattern on both sides and put the smallest dot of hot glue in 4 places to hold the next ring to the disk. I found that if I don't put match marks they don't always align well if the rings are 180° out. JT
