today was a "nap on the sofa" evening, I should've spent time in the shop but there's always tomorrow. for shop work, I'm still cleaning up last years "odd stock" off-cuts. and gluing them into usable pieces or assemblies. I also picked up a commission last week for a 21" x28" end grain Hickory chopping board using blue or sap-stained hickory.
I also got a message from my drug dealer's (ok Pharmacist) teenage son, asking if he can come be my apprentice this summer to expand his skills. I cannot say no to someone who wants to learn.
Like Larry, we should see a 40+ temperature differential from today to Sunday. That will help get us closer to almost above freezing and melt the ice covering our driveway.

Spent a good part of the day corresponding with our tax guy's office staff. Scanning forms, and emailing back and forth. Thought doing it this way would save time. NOT!

Tomorrow I'll visit with a fellow wood butcher who I met on our neighborhood web site. Then, back to the shop to work on Phyl's table.

Sunday is clean up day.  BIL and wife should be here Monday. Must not let them see a dirty and  disorganized  shop. Shop time will be limited for a few weeks.

Even though it's been cold the sun has just about cleared the remainig snow from our driveway.

Problem with that is it will be awhile before the mudpit dries up enough to do any work on the cars. <_<

My weekend is going to a Cardiac conference (in it as I am type this). Tomorrow some smoking/grilling and more work in my wife’s coffee table. Idk if I mentioned this but daughter has be accepted in a Doctor of Physical Therapy program. So this will be last year playing college softball. Thursday we head to FSU to open the season.

stay warm everyone.

Awesome news Kevin. Congratulations. Great field, much needed and takes a very special person to pursue especially at a high level. Our oldest granddaughters boyfriend was just accepted for his MS-PT. My primary PT after back surgery had her Phd-PT. She was awesome. Our daughter was a  licensed Athletic Trainer for many years too both at the HS and collegiate level. Taught AT as an Adjunct for one college.

Awesome! Yeah a good PT is hard to find. After growing up in a two RN family she told us she did not want to pursue that

In my previous life as a speech pathologist, I  worked closely with some great PTs and OTs. We often worked as a team in evaluating and providing therapy for youngsters at the schools that contracted our services. The results of their therapy was often nothing short of miraculous. Some of our young clients were totally incapable of oral communication. My job was to either teach them sign language or instruct them in the use of computerized devices. In those instances, the OTs were invaluable. Many of those kids were severely physically handicapped from birth, requiring all three of us. I've been retired for 25 years and I still miss working with them.

Been an interesting weekend so far. Made a lemon meringue pie friday after work, spending time with in laws before they go home next week

Today my father in law finished up a tea box he has been working on while they have been staying here this month, and I spent the morning figuring out how to sharpen turning tools effectively and efficiently.  I managed to acquire 2+ full sets of turning tools as part of my ShopSmith projects and while a couple of them were moderately sharp, most of them are not and the profiles are badly mangled or misshapen.  So far I have figured out how to sharpen roughing gouges, spindle gouges, skews, and parting tools.  Still need to figure out how to sharpen some of the profile gouges but that is a chore for another day.

Other than that I have been working on figuring out how to build an entry table for the wife.  The legs and overall measurements have been giving me fits but I think I have it sorted out at this point.  Need to get the leg templates cut out and profiled and I think I will be ready to start that project.

helped out a neighbor today.  we went a got a load of water for her cistern, 850 gallons, so now she has experienced that little chore, knows where i go and what i do when i say i'm hauling water.  wrote an email to the new county engineer, lobbying for county water line out our way, helped same neighbor hang some fancy mirrors in her main bath, and before all that, did some basic grocery shopping.  so exciting.

she's the same neighbor i gave the cutting board to, and she's decided it's too nice to use for that purpose, so she has it on her dining room table with some knick knacks displayed on it.....whatever.  she wondered how much i'd charge to make that for a stranger, told her it has about 150 bucks of wood in it, so apply the 4x rule of thumb, so yeah, 5-6 hundred.  oh - in that case, it's REALLY nice.  go ahead and use it dear, you won't ruin it.

Took the dresser up to daughter yesterday.  Loaded the wardrobe up for the return trip.  That was a good solid build, and it will get a new home with a son & wife of our best friends.  Will plan to make that delivery in a couple weeks or so.

When I left Norcross I intended to stop in Sandy Springs at the Rockler store for a couple items, it's not too far off a very main drag (GA 400) that crosses the beltway.  The phone said major construction, but still the fastest way, on the beltway in that area.  OK... what it didn't tell me was that there would be no signage announcing GA 400!  Having missed my exit I just came on home.

Since I had time I stopped at the hotel liquidator on the way home to see what they might have.  Another big pile of headboards :D   I will plan to go back next week and pick up at least three for use as counter tops.  I now have the kick in the pants needed to complete the drawing and cut list to see if I might need another couple for the cabinet builds.  The stuff I tore down the other day is a pretty good quality melomine with both sides having wood veneer.  For garage cabinets that are no where near water lines these ought to do well for my purposes.
