That must be something like we have in Vocational Education called Skills USA. Kids compete on local, regional, state and national levels in the trade areas they are training in.

My three girls went thru this multiple years and since then I've been helping out with the judging. I don't like to stick around for the awards so that I don't get asked by parents, "Why didn't..." But the prior emcee always said, we are bringing people up here for awards, not wooden projects. We are building people with skills, confidence, and perseverance. I think it also ingrained in my girls that they should not be bound by gender stereotypes. In fact, over the years, many of the best work I've seen has come from girls.

Most will not make woodworking a career and many won't even make it a hobby. But the things they have learned will last them a lifetime. A couple of members told me it took a long time to get their project completed. I relayed to them the story about "The Marshmallow Test."

Spent some time in the shop tonight after a crazy day at work and cut the top tenon for one of the legs.

My hand sawing skills are still not where I want them to be but getting better gradually.

@steven newman, speaking of planes, is it bad for the blade to knock off dried glue from seams? No different than hitting small knots?

How standard are plane irons? My old budget Stanley 14" has a blade which does not get very sharp. Does an old Stanley No. 4 iron swap right in?

Thank you for your experience and guidance

Save the planes.

Use a Bahco or, similar glue/paint scraper.

All depends on the size of the dried glue blobs.....little dribbles, plane them off...large streaks, sand them down

#4 sized planes and #5 sized planes NORMALLY take the same width irons.....2"
