February 4, 20224 yr Popular Post Friday again folks. Not that it makes much of a difference here "Two Weeks From Anywhere". The "Battle of the Boiler" continues with one of the old class room ventilators deciding to run like a freight train last evening. Wish they had put shut off valves in when they installed the system so we could isolate each ventilator/radiator without shutting down the boiler. We'll be fixing that oversite as the work continues. Nothing like hand threading pipes using my old REED pipe vise and dies. "School" methods on an " School" building. So this morning I'll be going over to replace the thermostatic steam trap valve and check the operation of the pneumatic actuated control valve after I get the Acetylene torch tank refilled. Will also be starting to replace three of the five float and thermostatic steam traps in the system starting Sunday after the store closes. They're Durham Bush originals from the 1956/1957 addition and remodel of the building, and cheaper to replace than rebuild if you can even find the discontinued rebuild kits. (Found one but got four N.O.S other brand F&T Traps for less than what they wanted for the one rebuild kit.) May run into the "Ground Hog" because three of those are located in the "Time Tunnels" under the east and west sides of the 1956/1957 addition to the building. Should I lock him up with yhpruM? He's still crying about our last encounter when he met me and my 24" pipe wrench down in the west tunnel. (P.B.A.M.F ) That's my weekend agenda, what's on yours? February 4, 20224 yr Popular Post Nothing near as ambitious as your weekend Larry! We've been having some pretty strong thunderstorms overnight and the forecast for today is more of the same. Then turn cooler tonight and stay pretty cold (for us) into mid week. Daughter may come in tomorrow, that should get the shadow box filled and gone back with her. I've started working on taxes. And in the shop, a group of picture frames. I may start a thread on those, there is a bit of woodworking to be done on them.
February 4, 20224 yr Popular Post After putting Frank through his paces with the vanity build, I can see that some adjustments are in order. i.e., the router fence had some slippage issues!!! So, Sunday will be spent on that job. And, there's a few other maintenance items that need done. If I'm lucky, woodworking can commence Monday. Back to dressing a bunch of rough sawn walnut. Sometimes I long for some S4S stock. But, hey. What I got is what I got. And, it was free!
February 4, 20224 yr Popular Post Cleaned up from the snow storm this morning (just finished) which included making an area for the dog as well as having to dig out the stand-by generator. (Marie uses an O2 concentrator at night, so we had to have emergency power). The genny was completely buried by snow drifts. At this point I'm so pooped the rest of the day is for recovery. Tomorrow I may get to the shop.
February 4, 20224 yr Popular Post Have to play in the snow first and then get to the shop. Still playing with the ornament sets. Made some small finials and put some lacquer on them yesterday. Finish gluing this set up today if I get a chance.
February 4, 20224 yr Popular Post Another snowless winter storm, here, just rain. Still trying to get Windows 11 installed. Might just bite the bullet and do a clean install. Played around with a white oak platter yesterday, between computer reboots and install failures.
February 4, 20224 yr Popular Post After 2 days (or months in metric) of doing basically nothing, I'll be in the wide open shop relocating 1/2" to 5-1/2' (depending where you measure) of a mix of pristine Canadian/Texas gulf snow we had delivered the past couple of days. It's been 11 mo, 3 weeks since I used the snowblower last; that resulted in 7 days in the hospital only to get stabbed in the back there, followed by 6+ months of whining (hindsight, should have removed the "h"). Hoping for better outcome this time around. Remainder of weekend will be determined after today's relocation exercise. EDIT UPDATE: Snow plow just opened up the road...yippee!! February 4, 20224 yr We are supposed to go shooting tomorrow and continue on with the media room ceiling. All of that is on hold until after today. Thursday I suddenly developed what we hope is myocarditis. The other options are not as good. Thursday night started throwing lots of PVC’s. Since I have no other health issues and no cardiac history everyone’s bet is myocarditis secondary to my booster vaccine which was exactly two weeks ago Thursday. I feel fine but it’s kind of unnerving. Today it’s every test known to man to find out what the root cause is. Too much fun. Paul
February 4, 20224 yr Popular Post Prayers to you Paul everything checks out well with nothing serious. Take care!!

February 4, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Shortly after I posted this morning the neighbor called saying there's no pressure on the filter bank gauges. I'm like and go over to see what the heck now. Check the well tank gauge and nothing there either. Check well fuses and they're ok. Go out and since it was a whole 6° at the time checked the well pressure switch. Bingo! Frozen switch. Ok where's the heat gun? Twenty minutes to find the heat gun. Thirty seconds to thaw the switch. Now where did we leave off?
February 4, 20224 yr Popular Post I am thinking a fireplace is less work. 1 minute ago, Larry Buskirk said: Shortly after I posted this morning the neighbor called saying there's no pressure on the filter bank gauges. February 4, 20224 yr Popular Post Building 3 bookcases for the library. I feel like I spend my life building bookcases for them. Sigh.
February 4, 20224 yr Popular Post Still snowed in..don't really NEED to go out the doors, anyway. Son ran the electric snow blower/ shovel until the battery died....front sidewalk up to the front door is cleared a bit...Alley has been plowed...ONCE. Neighbor is snowed in with a 3-4' drift all around her car. One of the nice features about the Dungeon Woodshop...it IS in a basement, with it's own heat register....may mosey back down there later, have dovetails to do.... Used to remember when it being a FRIDAY meant something good. Can also remember trying to drive the 17 miles each way to get to work and back, while driving in this crap...been more than once, I simply turned around and went back home...was unsafe to drive. Since I'm now retired, no need to go out in this stuff.

February 4, 20224 yr Author Popular Post @Cal had asked me to take a few photos of the "Old School" project. I decided to post here for Cal and anyone else interested what I could get at to take photos while the stores open. First a few photos of the outside of the building. The old section (1923-1924) former front entrance. West side 1923-24 and 1956-57 addition west side. The peaked roof on the addition was added about 2 years ago. Previous roof was a flat roof that had seen better days. And here's "The Beast" 780,000 btu that had to be installed so the school district could sell the building back in the mid 90's. The rest of the system dates from the 1956-57 addition/remodel. Here's the condensate return tank that we had to replace. And the feedwater makeup filter system that I basically copied from a commercially available system on a smaller scale for less than 1/4 the cost of the commercial system. From left to right 20 Micron pleated cartridge, 20 Micron charcoal cartridge, 5 Micron wound string cartridge, Cation Resin cartridge, Polyphosphate Resin cartridge. The first three do the filtering the other two water softening/conditioning and anti-scaling agents. The last canister is for if we need to add another softening/conditioning cartridge. Depends upon water test after the system has been flushed with the current cartridges. Still getting residual salt readings from the previous (Wrong type) water softener. Here's a view of one of the Herman Nelson ventilator units in the 1956-57 addition. And the Heat Exchanger/Air Handler that does the 1923-24 original part of the building. I'll post a few more photos a bit later, gotta run neighbor called. Edited February 4, 20224 yr by Larry Buskirk
