January 31, 20224 yr Popular Post @John Morris must be sleeping in or letting the dog out for her morning constitutional. So, What did ya get done over the weekend and, what's on yall's agendas for the coming week? Hope it doesn't involve any roof climbing! My weekend wasn't too exciting. Tried to replace a faucet set in my bathroom. Everything went smoothly until I tried to connect the supply lines. Not sure, but it looks like the threads on the lines are different from the ones on the faucet. I gave up. Plumber is coming tomorrow.$$$$ I've always said that, whether its plumbing or electrical, if I work on it, it'll leak. If it ain't wood, I'm lost. If it is wood, I still wander about a lot. Phyl has a sign in the family room that says "Not all who wander are lost" I fit in there somewhere. Today, is going to be a non-shop day. First a run to the bank...20 miles.. then a trip to the U of Arizona...50 miles, or so, miles the other direction to rummage through their office, classrooms and, departing students' discards. Last time I was there, I got a year old Dell laptop for $50. This time, I'm looking for wooden file cabinets for the shop. If there's other large wooden items, I may pick them up just for the wood. Wish me luck....I use Google's Maps so I shouldn't get lost.
January 31, 20224 yr Popular Post Spent the best part of the weekend fiddling with Sketchup. Finally made some progress. After all these years of using the software I realize how little I know about it.
January 31, 20224 yr Popular Post Got shop not clean but the tools and such got put away and started back on the ornament creation. Same planned for this week but may take a day to sweep and vacuum up some shavings.
January 31, 20224 yr Popular Post headed to a neighbor's shortly to measure some cabinet openings so i can design and build some cabinet doors for the mobile island cabinet. this will allow them to later keep the new kid out of the cabinet contents. all i know is that they will be painted. design TBD.
January 31, 20224 yr Popular Post Just getting ready for the impending dump of snow supposedly coming our way. That will entail putting the snowthrower on the tractor and moving it up to the garage, getting some more gas in the walk behind thrower, and staging shovels and brooms where I can get to them. To complicate things Marie has a minor surgery scheduled for Wednesday to get her little finger fixed (arthritis problem).
January 31, 20224 yr Popular Post Worked on a small Red Oak box..... Do you know what is the best thing about waking up on a Monday.....? Neither do I.... Started today off with a bang....literally.....as I wound up on the bedroom floor....awakened from a very sound sleep...to discover that elbows, knees and foreheads are not meant to be Landing Zones. Remember how you felt after the Crew Chief kicks your butt out of the Huey...6' above the ground...yeah, something like that. Good thing the shop is closed, today... Son seems to think I need a 1" thick Foam Landing Pad beside the bed....can't imagine why...
January 31, 20224 yr Popular Post A do nothing weekend resting from all the smoke eating Friday. Did clean a bunch of junk out of the email files, does that count? Oh I forgot , maybe I need to, The Chiefs lost in OT.
January 31, 20224 yr Popular Post January 31! The ban on indoor restaurant dining ended at midnight. We (The couple we usually go for Sunday breakfast with, Lynn and myself) met at the restaurant just before 7:00 am, the FIRST patrons back after the latest lock-down!! Bacon and eggs never tasted so good! Oh, yes... cleaned up a little in the shop, telephone doctor's appointment around 1:30, and currently procrastinating, as usual.
January 31, 20224 yr Popular Post Busy weekend and Monday at least for me. Saturday had a birthday celebration for my step-father at his assisted living facility. He turned 95 yesterday. I had put together a 1927 history series by month for him. Only shared some of it with everyone...gave him a 25 page (14 pt Arial for easier reading) folder to look over in his leisure. 1927 was a historical year both around the world and especially in the U.S. The Bambino hit 60 home runs, a guy by the name of "Chuck" flew from New York to Paris, "talkies" hit the theaters, and a whole lot more. I may have enjoyed it as much or more than him. Sunday, Church, lunch out afterwards and some errands. Spent the rest of the afternoon resting up some. Today ran some errands in town including filling up the truck in advance of the big snow event starting Wednesday. Tomorrow getting the snow blower ready, snow shovels tuned up with spray silicone, gas cans filled etc. Hope the snowblower will start. It ran out of gas putting it in storage late last February. Two weeks later I was in the hospital. Hoping for better results this time around. Remainder of the week will be determined by 'Ole man winter". Gonna be a battle seeing who gets out of whose yard.
January 31, 20224 yr Popular Post Went to the furniture bank this morning. Five of us prepped components (legs, aprons, tops) for 16 dining tables. Assembled 9 of them by 11:30 (including a donut break). I repaired 8 pieces -- some broken off sofa legs, a desk that had fallen apart, drawers that fell apart, and assembled one flat pack nightstand. A lot sturdier build than IKEA stuff, but took a long time to glue up joints, put in pocket hole screws, assemble a drawer, etc. I got out about 1 and a guy that works alone was going to knock off a bunch of end tables in the afternoon. Mostly working in small groups of 4-5 one morning a week last year, we made or repaired 864 pieces of furniture Later this week need to look at a broken chair back for daughter's neighbor and make a couple of picture frames from lumber.
February 1, 20224 yr Popular Post @Grandpadave52 That was very thoughtful of you Dave, putting that 1927 history together for your step father. Congrats on hid 95th birthday. Sounds like you've been busy. Don't over do with the snowblower. Take care of that back.

February 1, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Monday's adventures resulted in not much joy. Got the bank business done OK. But that long trip to the U of AZ warehouse was nearly a wasted one. Pickings were slim. No wooden file cabinets there. And, no wooden furniture at all. Unless you count MDF as wood. So, to not go home empty handed, I got a two drawer metal file cabinet. The U of A purchasing dept. certainly doesn't buy cheap stuff. Heavier gauge steel than many one might see at Wal-mart. I chose one whose locking mechanism had been removed. Don't need to lock it and, that hole doesn't bother me. The drawers open smoothly without racking. Drawer glides aren't on ball bearings but, certainly heavy duty ones. The intended use is to hold all the miscellaneous tools that the FrankenSmith uses, like router wrenches, router raiser cranks, saw table finger boards, and the like. All of which are presently in plastic paint buckets or, strewn about the floor. The drawers will need dividers and trays and, as Bandit says, we have our ways. The cabinet will fit handily under Frank's router table.
