OSCILLATING MULTI TOOL STORAGE BOX

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

Oddly my Father did not have a oscillating multi tool.  A trip to HF fixed this problem but the box the tool comes in only holds the tool without the blade installed.  I prefer mine ready to go.  At home this is hardly a problem, I have two and have them laid out in a drawer.

Like so.

We do not have drawers available at this time so a shelf will suffice.  Took some scrap plywood and edge banded then made a top using same method.  Glued together then cut the top off the box so I have matched fit.  A @steven newman classic trick.

That got me to the layout which was simple.  Only needed a holder for the head of the unit.  The tools and extra blades I put in a old Sucrets box and labeled with tape.

Finish is Rustoleum aluminum paint with 2 coats of shellac.  Handle is from a old Hollywood video that closed and left the cabinets outside.  I stripped off every piece of hardware they left.

Off to Mothers tomorrow to install or put away 7 projects for her shop.  This will be one of those.

Simple, functional and sturdy. Like the over-center latch. Where'd  you get that style?

Toggle latches

Got them on amazon.  I like them because you can adjust the tension or length.

Used on another project last year.

Great idea and nice box.  That will be handy for many years.

You know, I don’t have one either. A friend swears by them for all kinds of projects. Nice build on the storage box

It is a really cool tool to have.  I have the Fein with sanding pads and saw blades for either metal or wood.  I cut out the bottom of a sink cabinet in just a few minutes and replaced it with marine plywood.  I would have been there all day with a chisel and hammer.

I’m pretty sure there will be something on the honey-do list that will “require” the purchase of one :D

I bought the Ryobi to under cut the door jams when I installed the sub floor in the kitchen. Floor guys were able to cut the flooring square and slide it under and not around the jams. I also used it to cut the siding on the south wall when I enlarged the window. The blades aren't cheap but the tool is handy.

Nice job on the box Gunny:TwoThumbsUp:

I surely is Gunny, but you didn't color coordinate the paint job?  What's up with that?

And just like that Gunny comes through with another project that I need to rip off and make a copy of

I bought my first one, H-F, not variable speed, for about $20 several years back when I was doing laminate install at my daughter's house across state. Like @DuckSoup, I first used to undercut door jabs. Then with carbide blades was the nuts to clean up/finish irregular cuts when installing tile. Also works great for cutting out box openings in drywall; much easier to control the dust. It worked great for cutting out old copper pipe, PVC, DWV, etc. I used it a lot for remodel projects.

I've found several other one off uses too when I remember I have it. I even bought a 2nd identical for about $15 w/coupon as a back-up because, well it was a H-F and cost for extra was far less than gas to get a replacement in the middle of a job. The back-up is still in the plastic; only time it's been run was to make sure it worked. Variable speed on one would probably be nice though.

Mine's from HF, also. I'm not terribly enamored with mine. I may have asked too much of it. The HF blades are crap, though. Better quality blades might be in order.

Agreed although HF now offers an upgraded brand...Bauer I think?? One definitely wants to use a HSS blade that is designed to cut ferrous material i.e. nails. Otherwise you end up with a lot of blades reground into various scraper blades. VOE.

I stumbled upon a pretty good close sale stash at Menards of Bosch blades that interchange so I'm good for a while. Shoot who am I kidding; for life likely.

If the need arises again (i hope never) it'll be the Bauer. And thanks for the blade info.

No, color was chosen by Mother on that one.  She wanted it to stand out in cabinet.

Nice. Are those metal barrister style cabinets? Those are a sweet find. I don't  think I've ever seen metal ones.

Yes, Dad got them at some auction 20+ years ago.

Try these, much better than HF and box stores.  Bi metal and seem to last.

Great job Gunny. I have two Job Max by Ridgid. One refurb and one from eBay. One battery and one corded. I use the corded for sanding on lathe, works great.

@Gunny, many thanks for that blade link!
