Some cleaning up of the carving to do, but almost done. I'm not that pleased with the feathers but it was the best thing that I could come up with. It was challenging to get in between the feathers to clean them out. Plaque is done and ready for the finishing!

That is amazing Frederick. It surely has to be rewarding to see the transformation thus far?

I really like how you've "softened" the wings. Keep the updates coming.

I'd say you done a great job on the feathers, looking forward to seeing this with finish applied.

Ditto! And, amazing as well. You are a true artist with the knives and gouges. 

As I was cleaning up the shop, I thought that I would show how much wood was removed from the carving/plaque. The first photo shows the carving chips that were removed, during the process of carving the eagle, and the second photo shows the wood removed by two molding planes.... one a reverse ogee/fillet and the other a 1/4" beading plane. I made  4 feet of molding for my plaque.

Amazing...those resemble most of my finished projects prior to finish (finish putting them in the burn pile)

 

Love all the stained glass work too. Is that in your talent quiver too?

Thanks! Most of the leaded/foiled glass is my design/creation.

All, VERY nice. The Blue-jay really caught my attention. Not overstated in design (hope that makes sense?) but a real attention grabber. The colors are perfect IMHO. Beautiful work! 

The eagle and plaque are finally together(temporarily). Unpainted portions are the ones that will be gilded.

Gessoing complete. Now, for some sizing/gilding/touch up and I'll be done. I already have another carving in mind to do after this one!

Looking forward to seeing this with the gilding...can't wait to see your next project idea.

The chips have flown and, the result is another wonderful piece. Anxiously awaiting the foil application. 

That is professional to the point it should be displayed in a military museum. It should be preserved. Absolutely wonderful.

I'm doing something a little bit different with the gilding, than before, and am curious about how well it will turn out. The input from the members here will be greatly appreciated!!!

Project complete. I just have to attach it to the plaque and find a place on the wall for it!
