Opening a can of worms

Featured Replies

I've been doing some research and window shopping for a hollowing system with the goal narrow opening hollow forms in mind.  I have yet to make a decision but I have some criteria.  I'm hoping that someone can point me to the "best of the best".

  • Captive bar
  • Heavy duty
  • Actual boring bar, not lathe tool adapter.
  • Availability of both HSS and Carbide cutters for the tool
  • Laser guide.

Any advice would be appreciated as this is new territory for me.

Look at the one Tim Yoder sells. I think @Gerald has one-

I re-read Gerald's thread from this past summer on the topic and visited Tim's site.  I'm not really a fan of the clip attachment to the tailstock with this system.  Looking for a captive bar rather than an articulating arm...???I think???  Could be I'm missing the mark though.

I don't have a rig to do hollowing. @Gerald and maybe @Steve Krumanaker  will answer with more information

The new Elbo does not attach to tailstock , but has a riser that attaches between the ways. I upgraded my original Elbo with Tim's new laser and it is great. I had a picture of the New one I posted couple months ago and Tim has not yet posted on his site. His new unit do all on your list. He told me he plans to discontinue the older unit at some time in the future. New unit is much heavier.  You will have to call him for pricing. He had just gotten it ready for SWAT in August. Think you will find his price lower than other comparable units. He will answer his phone. I asked for a pic and he sent me this image from SWAT. It is very smooth and I would love to have one.20210827_120652.jpg.4c543276455ffdfb04c68faf4a505085.jpg

I wasn't aware of the modifications on the elbo, with that, I have the original and have been well pleased with it. I also have a home made version of Lyle Jamieson's captured bar set up. It will do much deeper vessels. Both work as advertised IMO. I will say, I probably saved a couple hundred dollars making my own but were I to do it again I would just buy Lyle's system outright.

Thanks for all of the responses.  I've narrowed the candidates down to 3 choices.

Does an articulated arm handle torsion (side to side torque) as well as a captured bar?  The D shape handle seems like it would more readily accept this kind of force.

I didn't remember in my first post but I did end up buying Lyle's dual purpose bar and tool holders. They are well made and a good option. I have also switched from a laser to a camera set up. Highly recommend you at least consider the camera route, it is a nice upgrade in my opinion and can be done pretty reasonably.

Does not look very different from the Trent Bosch system .....
