Inside out turning

Featured Replies

I'm TRYING to expand my skill set!!!!

I'm looking for any insider tips on inside out turnings.

I've looked at a couple of youtube videos and have accepted the challenge,

howsoever I'm not interested in damaging anything in proximity to the lathe (me).

Books, techniques, suggestions, tools, etc.

Regarding the tools----any particular size better than another?

All comments welcomed.

Thanks

As Lew posted, you need those 4 sticks.  HandyDan and Ron Altier often do some inside out turning.  Some folks glue the blocks together using some type of paper, others will use hot glue and radiator hose clamps.  If you use the clamps, use tape to keep from tearing skin as they are whirling fast.  After cutting the inside, you rotate the sticks 180 degrees and do the real glue up.  Then you turn the outside.  There are many good presentations on YouTube.  It takes time and thought.  Otherwise a load of fun.  Looking forward to your products.

Here's a couple videos to see it hands on.  I think he goes overboard with the glue on the first turn.  I use just a small strip of glue on the ends and the tape.

Lots of good info in the videos I am sure. Some things I discovered while doing 18 oversize ornaments awhile ago. The pieces glued up need to be the exact same size. Mark the ends so you can get the rotation correct. It may be helpful to have the blanks a little long and if you have trouble getting it apart on first turn you can cut the ends off. Also if you want to make several the same then make templates of the inside pattern.IMG_4306.JPG.129d5d71a3a438364310df62acb21a0f.JPG

I added finial and topper but you can do without those.

One more thing is the color on inside. Some woods will bleed and doing the color work before reversing the pieces will allow turning away the excess on the outside "most" of the time. So use light load on brush when coloring.
