May 7, 20215 yr Popular Post ... We made it to another Friday Folks! ...Seems like I lost a couple of days somewhere since Monday. ... Have to wonder where they went. Won't be a whole lot happening here "Two Weeks From Anywhere" forecast calls for rain most of the weekend. ... Oh well, the lawn will still be there next week, just more to mow. So, What's on your weekend agenda?
May 7, 20215 yr Popular Post Much as I try to skip mowing on the weekends (let the folks with day jobs pollute the air, I'll do it during the week) I may have to due to the finicky rain schedule. Otherwise it's mostly puttering.
May 7, 20215 yr Popular Post Got all the walls insulated. Now, a little cleaning of insulation scraps and bits. Then, start cutting 820 sq. Ft. for the ceiling. Our boys will install those, though. Need to run to the hardware store for another bunch of box cutter blades. I go through one blade per roll. Got 22 rolls to go. Due to the beam spacing, the cuts are all about 56" . With 15" wide insulation, thats a lotta cuts. If my math is right, I'm going to need about 200 of those 56"X15" pieces.
May 7, 20215 yr Popular Post Starting on another murphy bed - this for some friends who just moved into a new house. Still working on mother's shoe/storage unit for the entry from the garage. That hickory for the lid sure is tough stuff!
May 7, 20215 yr Popular Post Supposed to rain all weekend so I did all the mowing yesterday. Looks like an in shop weekend.
May 7, 20215 yr Popular Post Worked on the kitchen yesterday morning & cut the grass in the afternoon trying to stay ahead of the rain. 1 hour ago, Gene Howe said: I go through one blade per roll. I use an old straight edge kitchen knife & re-sharpen as needed. I put tape around the handle so she won't recognize it.
May 7, 20215 yr Popular Post Have been working with ShopSmith to locate the missing items from my initial order. My salesperson has done an outstanding job wrangling the freight company and she expects to re-ship the missing items later today. All-in-all about $1000 of accessories for the base machine weren't delivered. I bought about 30 board feet of 4/4 red oak from a supply house here in town. A portion of it will go toward installation of my York wood vise....1 1/2x12x24 spacer, jaws, and handle. The remainder will be shop stock. .40 Edited May 7, 20215 yr by forty_caliber
May 7, 20215 yr Popular Post You sometimes have to wonder how the trucking companies stay in business with as much stuff as they loose.
May 7, 20215 yr Popular Post Glued up some of the oak into panels to make the spacer. After the joint dries, I'll glue and stack them to get the required thickness. Mrs. Boss came out to the shop while I was putting them together and saw me using the biscuit joiner that she bought me when we were dating and teared up a bit. @Gunny Proof that I do occasionally get sawdust on the floor....:) .40
May 7, 20215 yr Something bad happened. Valve spring broke at 85mph. Exhaust valve dropped and went through piston like a bullet. Cost to repair? New engine $10,500

May 7, 20215 yr Popular Post Planning stages for a couple of fixtures for two churches. Not sure what they are called, but hold candles to be lit in memory on special holidays like memorial day, all saints day, veterans' day, etc. Model to mimic:
May 8, 20215 yr Popular Post I volunteered to build four hanging wall display cases for our local 4H fairgrounds so I’ll be in the shop.

Not sure what they are called, but hold candles to be lit in memory on special holidays like memorial day, all saints day, veterans' day, etc. Model to mimic: I found some butternut that I harvested in 1985. Air dried in my dad's barn 20 years and in mine since then. It's about 1 3/8 thick, rough sawn right from the mill, and I need to get smooth and down to 3/4" Filled up the 30 gal chip collector for the planer and still not quite there, about 7/8" now and quitting for the day.

If my math is right, I'm going to need about 200 of those 56"X15" pieces. Got a bunch cut. Got 11 more rolls to go. About 6 hours of work. That'll be for Monday. Tomorrow, we celebrate momma's day.
May 9, 20215 yr Will mow on Momma's day as we have 1 week of rain forecast. Will also make her a cake that she has requested. She may not remember, but I do. She was diagnosed last Tuesday with moderate dementia. It has progressed since her heart attack in 2016, but it has gotten bad. At the neurologist, I didn't have to say anything. He noticed and then had her examined for 8 hours. So, it is getting more and more contentious here. When she bulldozes the furniture, and falls out of her power chair, I call the fire department for lift assist. But, next week, while raining, I hope to get to practice turning some inside out ornaments.
May 9, 20215 yr Popular Post 1st wood lathe project (red oak vice handle) since before I grew my first whisker. It's not much as these things go, but I had fun. Finished with tung oil and beeswax. Planning to turn a couple of beads from cherry or walnut with a 5/8" shaft for the ends. That will have to wait until my PSI chuck comes in. Got the spacer out of clamps and cleaned up. This will mount under the table and give the vice a solid foothold. I still need to make the jaws...maybe from hickory. @Gunny ....even MORE sawdust .40
